DVD Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly Reading this book-instead of just the pre-pub discussion around it-makes one thing perfectly clear: it will not, as has been hoped or feared, do for any Clinton presidential campaign what Unfit For Command did for the Kerry one. This clip & paste job by a former editor of the New York Tim es magazine is unlikely to change a single mind, let alone vote-to parap hrase the political commentator, conservative Tucker Carlson, readers wh o already hate lightning-rod Clinton know why they hate her. Those who l ike her won't find their minds changed by any of the ersatz revelations in this ultimately uninteresting book. Klein, also the author of several books about the Kennedys, conducted some live interviews for this one, but he also borrowed liberally (pun intended) from dozens of published b ooks and articles. What "news" he turns up is too minor to make even Ent ertainment Tonight: the former First Lady drinks decaffeinated coffee, l ikes to sleep late in the morning (unlike her early-riser husband) and i s self conscious about her thick legs. Oh, and as a Wellesley student in the 1970s, she had lesbian friends and didn't shave her legs or underar ms. Klein seems intent on rehashing the rehash in this too-boring-to-eve n-be-execrable title. While glossing over such provocative-and substanti ve-Clinton issues as Whitewater, Travel-gate and Vince Foster's suicide, he concentrates nearly half of his 250 pages on-you guessed it-Monica L ewinsky. His central point: Hillary wasn't surprised, as she wrote in he r memoir Living History, by an early morning confession from Bill about Monica. She had in fact known about the president's chronic womanizing-a nd Monica specifically-for some time. Her "wronged wife" act was just th at: spin to garner sympathy for her own political ends. It's certainly t rue that Hillary came through the Monica mess as a more sympathetic char acter to many voters, but I don't remember Clinton so much as cultivatin g a wronged wife image as having one thrust upon her by the media. There's no doubt that the Lewinsky affair was emb arrassing and hurtful to the then-First Lady; Besides, who hasn't put a different face on painful personal b ehavior that somehow went public? Another of Klein's points is that Hill ary is ambitious-and that in her quest for power, she has put off lots o f people including, he says, the revered late New York senator, Daniel P atrick Moynihan and his campaign manager wife, Liz. I'd be tempted to pull out that old saw about how if Clinton were a man, "ambitious" would be a co mpliment, but since she's a woman, it's a synonym for that word that rhy mes with "rich." I'd do that, but that would be too Klein-ian of me: sup erficial, clichd and gender obsessed. But maybe I'm wrong about one thi ng: perhaps The Truth will change some votes. After reading it, those wh o've been tepid about the senator might indeed rally around her. After a ll, Klein makes it clear that any time someone tries to humiliate her pu blicly, she somehow manages to come out on top. Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Book Description Hillary Rodham Clinton is the most polarizing figure in American politics . Love her or hate her, everyone has a strong opinion about the former f irst lady turned senator who is almost certainly going to run for presid ent in 2008. Despite more than a dozen years in the national spotlight and more than a dozen unauthorized books about her, she has managed to keep many secret s from the publicespecially about her turbulent marriage and its impact on her career. There have been plenty of rumors about what Hillary and Bill Clinton did behind closed doors, but never a definitive book that e xposes the truth. Bestselling author Edward Klein draws on rare access to inside sources to reveal what Hillary knew and when she knew it during her years as first lady, especially during her husbands impeachment. Kleins book, embarg oed until publication, will break news about the choices and calculation s she has made over the years. It will also prove that she lied to Ameri ca in her bestselling autobiography Living History. When she was just a little girl, Hillary Rodham dreamed of becoming the f irst female president, and her lifelong dream is almost within reach. Bu t just as the swift boat veterans convinced millions of voters that John Kerry lacked the character to be president, Kleins book will influence everyone who is sizing up the character of Hillary Clinton.

Basica lly the kind of trash bag Kitty Kelly tried to sell us with her book "Th e Family," last year where she accused George W Bush of doing cocaine a t Camp David, and that Laura Bush dealt marijuana at South Methodist Uni versity. The difference however, is that Republicans are more willing to accept sl ander as gospel, and the hard core constituents are far too willing to d ismiss any legitimate criticism as partisan' attacks. The real truth about "The Truth About Hillary," is that much of the mater ial is a rehashment. Over eighty percent of the paragraphs are attribute d to other books, and much of the new material is usually cited to one o r two anonymous sources. Listed below are some paragraphs that look dang erously similar to some excerpts from a previous book by a different aut hor entitled The Clinton Wars." "The Truth About Hillary" On February 4, 2000, Bill Clinton and a small group of aides gathered in the White House movie theater to help Hillary rehearse her formal-announ cement speech. Standing at the lectern, shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot, Hillary began reading haltingly from her draft speech. "Because I'm a masochist," Hillary shot back, half in jest. The president looked down at the copy of the draft in his hand and began re-arranging the order of the paragraphs. The Clinton Wars She had another adviser: the President. On February 4, 2000, he joined a small group of us to help pr epare the candidate for her formal announcement speech, to be delivered on February 6 We rehearsed in the White House movie theater, just as we did for the President's State of the Union addresses. But it was Hillar y, not Bill, at the podium, and he sat with the rest of us, offering poi nters and word changes. He'd leap up excitedly, advising, "You need to say why you're running her e and now." He began rearranging the sequence at the beginning of the speech. What I wish you could do, Hillary, is a se ntence here: The overwhelming reason is that I don't want to give up my life in public service."
The more sleazy and therefore profitable allegations are that Hillary Cli nton is a lesbian, and that Chelsea was conceived after Bill raped her. Sean Hannity (not exactly a beacon of liberal discourse) took exception to these claims with Ed Klein in the following transcript. KLEIN: It's one source who I checked out very carefully. HANNITY: Is one anonymous source enough, then, to go to print with someth ing like that? KLEIN: Well, you know, I've been at this for 40-some-odd years, Sean. I wouldn't go to print -- HANNITY: So, you had two sources? HANNITY: But in the case of this rape story -- KLEIN: Of course I did, yes. HANNITY: In the case of the story of how Chelsea was conceived, you had o ne source in the book. Asked by Hannity to justify the gay-baiting innuendo in his book, Klein o nce again contradicted himself. In the radio interview, Klein stated tha t he does not "accuse her of being a lesbian in this book": KLEIN: First of all, let me make clear, I do not accuse her of being a le sbian in this book, as you know. It comes up because it is relevant to understanding the bas is of her political point of view. On Hannity and Colmes, however, Klein returned once again to rumor and in nuendo, admitting that he was in fact questioning "her sexuality," and s tating that Hillary Clinton has "given all kinds of signals that her sex uality is in question."
