Commission Executive Director Mark Mosher cited statistics from the state Employment Development Department indicating that California has added 84,600 new jobs in the first five months of 2005. That brings to more th an 250,000 the number of jobs added since Governor Schwarzenegger and th e Legislature enacted comprehensive workers' compensation reforms last y ear. Those reforms, which were developed in response to employer complaints th at skyrocketing workers' compensation costs were a chief barrier to grow th, have already reduced pure premiums by an average of 30%. Mosher also pointed to dramatic improvements in a number of other key eco nomic statistics as evidence that California's economy is making a stron g and sustained comeback from the 2001 recession: * California non-farm employment reached a record high of 14,738,600 in May * Though it accounts for only 12 percent of the nation's population, Ca lifornia in May accounted for nearly 23 percent of jobs created nationwide. "The strong economic news and the Governor's success in controlling spend ing and holding the line on taxes have been instrumental in helping the Commission get out its message that California is serious about creating an environment that is favorable to employment," said Warren Hellman, w ho serves as co-chairman of the independent, volunteer Commission along with Los Angeles attorney Ron Olson. "Californians remain focused on two of the most important things that wil l help the state succeed: improving the economy and creating jobs," said Hellman, who is chairman and co-founder of a private equity investment firm in San Francisco. The Commission's mid-year progress report outlined some of the work it ha s been doing to promote the state's economy, businesses, products and se rvices. The report was accompanied by a roster of Commission members and a list of its donors. David Crane, an honorary Commission member and a special economic advisor to Governor Schwarzenegger, said it makes good sense for independent gr oups like the Commission to promote the fact that California is actively growing jobs and its economy. "Employers have told us over and over again that they'll be able to hire more workers if the Legislature follows the Governor's lead in focusing on cost reduction and infrastructure improvement," Crane said. "And to m ake California's recent improvements even more effective, employers insi de and outside the state need to know things have changed for the better . That's why it's very helpful when independent groups such as the Commi ssion tell the world about the new approach in California." According to Mosher, the Commission will focus over the next six months o n expanding its work and continuing to build on its momentum. "We've done some good work over the past six months and we made some big- splash headlines last year with the Governor's help that drew prominent national and international attention to California's new 'open for busin ess' attitude," Hellman said. "We are continuing to build on that, recru iting new employers and other members to the Commission, executing our a genda and doing the difficult work of growing the state's economy and cr eating more jobs."
