6/24 Someone was asking for attribution for this quote: "the West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do." This is from Samuel P. Huntington, a political scientist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_P._Huntington \- The explosion with Serge Lang [occasional UCB Math] was kind of funny. It ocurred about when Kenneth Waltz [fmr UCB Political Sci.] was the President of the American Political Science Assn. There are definitely some social scientists who got carried away with things like game theory or chaos theory, including pretty prominent people. Waltz is a great prof, and this controversy put him in an awkward situation. BTW, for an well-thought out and not super difficult or specialized theory of the sources of inter-state conflict see Waltz59: Man, the State, and War. It disagrees with ideas such as "dominating source of conflict will be cultural" from Huntington. |

The article and the b ook articulate his theory of a multi-civilizational world headed for con flict. In his writings, he is critical of both Western and non-Western b ehavior, accusing both of at times being hypocritical and civilization-c entric. He also warns that Western nations may lose their predominance i f they fail to recognize the nature of this brewing tension. Third World, in order to keep the latter "in check", that is, preve nting their economic development. However, Huntington has also argued th at this shift in geopolitical structure requires the West to strengthen itself internally, abandoning democratic universalism and incessant inte rventionism. American Dream, which he says is the "dream created by an Anglo-Protestant society". He further states that Mexican Americans can "share in that dream and in t hat society only if they dream in English". mathematician, began challenging Huntington's nomination . Lang campaigned for others to deny Huntington membership and was event ually successful, with Huntington being nominated and rejected twice. Huntington's prominence as a Harvard professor and (at the time) director of Harvard's Center for International Studies contributed to the covera ge by publications such as The New York Times and The New Republic. Lang's accusations included claims that Huntingt on had distorted the historical record and used pseudo-mathematics to ma ke his conclusions appear more convincing. Lang's side of the controvers y is covered in his book Challenges. edit Quotes * "It is my hypothesis that the fundamental source of conflict in this new world will not be primarily ideological or primarily economic. The great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of conflict will be cultural. Nation states will remain the most powerful actors in world affairs, but the principal conflicts of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different civilizations. The clash of civilizations will dominate global politics. The fault lines between civilizations will be the battle lines of the future." Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do." |
