UP Poll: China Image Scores Better Than US Thursday June 23, 2005 9:31 PM AP Photo GFX902 By WILL LESTER Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States' popularity in many countries - inclu ding longtime allies in Europe - is lagging behind even communist China. The image of the US slipped sharply in 2003, after the invasion of Iraq , and two years later has shown few signs of rebounding either in Wester n Europe or the Muslim world, an international poll found. The US image has improved slightly, but is still broadly negative,'' said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. I n France, 58 percent had an upbeat view of China, compared with 43 perce nt who felt that way about the US The results were nearly the same in Spain and the Netherlands, the Pew polling found. The United States' favorability rating was lowest among three Muslim nati ons that are also US allies - Turkey, Pakistan and Jordan - where only about one-fifth of those polled viewed the US in a positive light. On ly Indonesia and Poland viewed the US more positively than China. Clearly, with or without this poll we know we have a public diplomacy c hallenge, and that challenge is not lessening by the day,'' said State D epartment spokesman Adam Ereli. He said the United States is trying to combat that image problem, citing the frequent travels of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who was end ing a six-day swing through the Middle East and Europe on Thursday. The Iraq war has left an enduring impression on the minds of people aro und the world in ways that make them very suspicious of US intentions and makes the effort to win hearts and minds far more difficult,'' said Shibley Telhami, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Support for the US-led war on terror has dipped in European countries l ike Britain, France, Germany, Canada and Spain, while it remains low in the Muslim countries surveyed, such as Jordan, Pakistan and Turkey. The position of the United States as the one surviving superpower is to be assertive in responding in a world of terrorism. But in the rest of the world, there is a great wariness about that,'' said John Danforth, a former Republican senator from Missouri and a former US ambassador to the United Nations. The poll found a positive reaction in European countries to President Bus h's campaign for more democracy in countries around the world. People in Muslim countries were wary of the US campaign, but supportive of the idea of democracy in their own countries. Madeleine Albright, secretary of state under President Clinton, said the poll results are troubling because leaders of democracies allied to the US have to rally the public in their countries when supporting US po licies. The polls were taken in various countries from late April to the end of M ay with samples of about 1,000 in most countries, with more interviews i n India and China and slightly fewer than 1,000 in the European countrie s The margin of sampling error ranged from 2 percentage points to 4 per centage points, depending on the sample size.

Printable version China 'is more popular' than US Buyers and seller make a deal at a textile wholesale market in Shanghai China is well considered even if many are wary of its growing power America's image is still so tattered abroad after the Iraq war that China is viewed more favourably than the US in many countries, a global poll finds. Its image has not recovered in Western European countries, the US-based P ew Research Center found. In none of the 16 countries surveyed, the US included, does a majority of the public think the war leading to Saddam Hussein's removal made the w orld safer. But hostility towards the US has eased in some parts of the Muslim world. "It's amazing when you see the European public rating the United States s o poorly, especially in comparison with China," said Andrew Kohut, direc tor of the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, which carri ed out the survey. China is well considered in Europe and Asia, although there is considerab le wariness about its growing economic and military power. Solid majorities in every European nation except Turkey would not like to see China rival the US as a military superpower, the survey said. President George W Bush's calls for greater democracy in the Middle East and US aid to tsunami victims in Asia have been welcomed in many countri es. "We should keep plugging away on democracy," said former Senator John C D anforth, who co-chairs the Pew Global Attitudes Project with former US S ecretary of State Madeleine Albright. "But we need to do a better job of communicating what we're trying to do. " However, the survey finds that America continues to be viewed as largely indifferent to the interests of other countries in setting its foreign p olicies. The US image remains relatively poor in Muslim countries like Jordan and Pakistan, but has bounced back in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country. In most countries surveyed, Americans are seen as "inventive" and "hardwo rking", but they are also seen by many in both Western and predominately Muslim countries as "violent" and "greedy" - a judgement with which man y Americans agree. The survey was conducted among nearly 17,000 people from 20 April to 31 M ay with samples of about 1,000 in most countries, with more interviews i n India and China and slightly fewer than 1,000 in the European countrie s The margin of sampling error ranged from two percentage points to four pe rcentage points, depending on the sample size.

Perhaps this needs to be rubbed in their faces daily: Gao Rongrong, a persecuted FLG member, has become the latest addition of many skeletons hiding in the CCP's closet. Gao was an accountant at the Luxun College of Fine Arts in Shenyang City who was detained and imprisoned by Chinese authorities in June of 2003 f or her religious beliefs and ties to the FLG. After nearly two years of imprisonment, hard labor and brainwashing, Gao was reported to have been tortured to death by her captors four days ago. NEW YORK AP-The grossly disfigured face of 37-year-old Ms Gao Rongrong, the result of torture by Chinese authorities, was publicized around the world to the alarm of many. But it wasn't enough, sources revealed yeste rday, to save Gao from being tortured to death by Chinese Communist Part y officials. FDI (FD Information Center) has learned that Gao died just four days ago. Her death follows nearly two years of incarceration, brainwashing, and torture for her beliefs. Gao died in the emergency room of China Medical University Hospital of complications stemming from torture and abuse in custody. Here is a photo of Gao Rongrong before she was detained by Chinese author ities. Unfortunately, that's what 'Freedom of Religion' looks like in China. com So the Euroweenies prefer a morbund totalitarian regime that denies basic human rights to its people (not to mention Tibet) to the world's oldest constitutional republic that successfully defeated two odious political philosophies in the last years thereby keeping those same said Euroween ies free from totalitarianism.
