6/12 Why don't I hear any leftists whining about US imperial oppression of Mugabe these days? Mugabe's L1m Party As Millions Face Starvation http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1421595/posts \_ Nothing to do with leftists or rightists--the man's a shitbag, deserving of government-sanctioned assassination, and it'd be nice to hear from _anyone_ (including the US govt., see AIUSA thread below) that "something" should be done about him. -John \_ it has everything to do with leftists. He is a leftist, he is adored by leftists. \_ Either I'm being (badly) trolled or you're an idiot. I suspect both. -John \_ is this projection??? even the left leaning wikipedia acknowledges hes a Marxist http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mugabe \_ You've come from "you leftists are stupid, ha ha, you adore Mugabe" to "wikipedia calls Mugabe a Marxist." He's a shitbag, decent people of all political stripes loathe him. Did you have a point? No? Next then. -John \_ I don't understand your vitrol. Mugabe is a Marxist and, though you may have missed the news reporting it, was cheered by the left during his ascendence to power. This same Marxist scenario has played itself countless times and yet there are always people like yourself pretending he is something he is not. Strange. \_ Whatever pretenses he had to Marxism were in line with his leadership role in the Rhodesian civil war against the Smith regime, which was a reasonably noble undertaking. Overthrow of bad governments is as laudable if they are white, oppressive and racist as if they are black, oppressive and racist. Mugabe has given up any "revolutionary credibility" by being a vicious shit. I'm defending neither marxists nor thugs; I do, however, make allowance for people of any political persuasion to change their view of a tyrant once his true colors show. Would you say that anyone calling himself politically xyz is automatically xyz? Was Joe Stalin a communist? What would Marx have said? You tell me. -John \_ Why don't you hear any? Probably becuase you don't bother to read anytyhing outside your carefully circumscribed circle. Slate and The Nation have been griping about this guy for almost a decade. Glad you finally noticed he was a bastard. The Right used to love him, because he was anti-Soviet. \_ The fact that Trotsky disliked Stalin and Mao disliked Ho-Chi Minh does not preclude them all from being Marxists. But you are right Mugabe is really more a Maoist, having received the most support from China. \_ Oh, that's all right then. I got a newspaper in Berkeley that talks all about how great Mao was. |
www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1421595/posts blam Mugabes' 1m party as millions face starvation TREVOR GRUNDY ROBERT Mugabe and his wife Grace are this weekend preparing for a lavish wedding anniversary celebration by approving a guest list that includes the names of African leaders seeking massive debt relief for their impov erished countries. "It will be a classy, royal-like occasion," a government source said in H arare. "The Mugabes will be driven from a church service at Kutama Missi on outside Harare where they were married in August 1996 in an open Roll s-Royce with horses in front. The wedding anniversary party will reportedly cost close to 1m. It will be preceded by a Mugabe family trip to an as yet unnamed country with cl ose ties to Zimbabwe - possibly Libya. Plans for the lavish celebrations in August have been confirmed as millio ns of Zimbabweans face starvation. This year the country was forced to i mport millions of tons of grain, most of it corn from neighbouring count ries. The all-day party will be partly paid for by President Mugabe - one of Af rica's wealthiest men - partly by impoverished Zimbabwean taxpayers and partly by local companies seeking to stay in business at a time when the words "ethnic cleansing" are never far away from the lips of European, Asian and middle-class African businesspeople. The couple met when Pr esident Mugabe was still a married man. His first wife, Ghanaian-born Sally Mugabe, died in 1992 and 40 days of n ational mourning was declared. Then rumours started that the austere Cat holic-educated Mugabe had been having an affair for years with a State H ouse security operative, Grace Marufa. Robert Mugabe fathered two children with her - Robert Jnr (now 18) and Bo na, who is 16. The children were presented to almost 30,000 wedding gues ts at the end of August 1996. They will have a 10th wedding anniversary celebration next year. "It will probably be held at Mugabe's multi-million-pound palace in the suburb o f Borrowdale," said a source in the ruling Zanu-PF party. The father of Prince Harry's girlfriend has defended himself against al legations that his business dealings help "sustain" the Zimbabwean regim e Wealthy safari operator Charles Davy said he was "in business not politic s" after his dealings with Webster Shamu, the minister responsible for p olicy implementation under President Mugabe, were disclosed. Davy said his daughter Chelsy's relationship with the Prince had caused a "spate of rubbish" to appear about him in the media. "I have decided to put the facts on the table in the hope that you will e ither leave me alone or at least write the truth and limit the adverse i mpact of all these untruths on my children." He added: "I am in business with Mr Shamu and have been for five years. Zimbabwe's Movement for Democratic Change said yesterday that Davy's invo lvement with Shamu meant he was "sustaining" the regime. Let's not forget that only three years ago, Mr Mugabe was honored b y about a dozen or so members of the New York City Council .. presumably , I guess, because he took away the farms away from the white people ... This has contributed to the decline of food production .. and most of t he farms have been given to cronies of the President .. However, Mugabe was torn between this objective and pressures to meet the expectations of his own ZANU followers for a fast er pace of social change. About two years before, Mugabe had married his former secretary, Grace Marufu, 40 years his junior and with whom he already had two children, in a tribal ceremony. Mugabe just ified the marriage under a traditional African law which allows him to t ake a junior wife. However, he reassured white landowners that they had nothing to fe ar from black majority rule. Mugabe favoured a "willing buyer, willing s eller" plan for gradual redistribution of land but little was done in hi s early years in power. However, in 1999 and 2000 Mugabe used force to t ransfer land ownership from whites to blacks. Since land redistribution, Zimbabwe has transformed from being an exporte r of food to a nation where farms are appallingly mismanaged and five mi llion people need food aid. The proposed change would have limited future presidents t o two terms, but as it was not retroactive, Mugabe could have stood for another two terms. It would also have made his government and military o fficials immune from prosecution for any illegal acts committed while in office. Also, it allowed the government to confiscate white-owned land for redistribution to black farmers without compensation. Amid accusatio ns of violence and claims that large numbers of citizens in anti-Mugabe strongholds were prevented from voting, Mugabe defeated Tsvangirai by 56 % to 42%. His age and increasing reports of failing health have focused more attention on possible successors within his party as well as the opposition. He is portrayed as being a leader who rose to power as a liberator, but then grew corrupt and oppressive, much as Mugabe is considered to be by the Western world. |
