5/26 Is it possible to create an image file from 5.25" or 3.5" drive?
I'd like to create images of all of my 80s/90s diskettes, with
games like Star Control II, King's Quest, etc and see if they
play on VMWare or some emulator.
        \_ http://ntrawrite.sourceforge.net
        \_ I remember playing old 8088 (4.77Mhz) games on a 80386 (33Mhz)
computer and the difference was amazing. Some old games didn't
have speed controls built in and were actually unplayable. I
just can't imagine playing them on a 4Ghz (4000Mhz) computer.
\- Yes, you had to have jedi reflexes to play things like
8088 defender or stargate on the machines that were
.5-1 order of mag faster. It was good training.
\_ DOSBox lets you slow things down. There also are TSRs that
would insert a lot of no-ops everywhere.
\_ Whoa! Archon (1984) is supported!!! Now if only they'd tell
you how to rip from protected Archon disk to DOSBox...
                 \_ Just go download it.

                    \_ Image or EXE?
        \_ http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html
Create an image from a floppy, mount a virtual floppy (now that
           they're going away), etc.
        \_ Yes: dd if=/dev/fd0 of=./floppy.image
\_ IBM used to have a utility called DSKIMAGE around 1986-87. I just
searched the web and saw that Win Server 2003 has a utility with the
           same name.

9/21 are you guys really all using win7 in some way now?
\_ Yes. In my company, we have upgraded all our machines for
development, QA and other office use (HR, Finance, Receptions, etc.)
from WinXP to Win7 a few months ago. Our products now primarily
support Win7/Win2008 and secondarily support WinXP/Win2003.

Service Pack 3 installed. I have a valid key that I own (yeah yeah I
actually *bought* a copy, please don't flame me for supporting evil

for testing purposes? Will Windows or Microsoft detect copies and

7/28 Does it make sense to defragment disks on VMWare? My 80GB disk
on VMWare isn't really using 80GB, it just uses what it needs.
Will defragment do anything to it?
\_ If you want to speed up disk operation in your VM, it's best to
defragment the disks in your VM, then defragment the disk on your
host machine where the VM files are.

ntrawrite.sourceforge.net
here, and it's shockingly similar to this document th at you are reading. NTRawrite has been through three releases, and the only reported bug was that if the image file size was different than the diskette capacity, wh ich was fixed in 101 Rationale The reason I wrote NTRawrite is because Rawrite/Rawrite3 didn't work unde r NT half the time, and I didn't really want to figure out why. I looked at the source, and found out that: 1 The code was built with Turbo C which I'm not sure even exists any mo re. At point, someone made Rawrite 2 which put #ifdefs areound the Turbo C functions, and inserted the equivalent functions in MSC / VC. So it turns out that my emulated emulated calls weren't working for some reason, which deterred me from trying to research what my problem was an y further, since the likelihood of anyone sympathizing with my plight wa s near zero. I gave up and wrote NTRawrite, which didn't take that long. Uses supported Windows NT / Windows 2000 APIs f or diskette manipulation. The data written to the diskette is verified against th e source image file. Current Problems * Has not been tested on a wide variety of floppies or floppy drives. A ll comments welcome if you have a failure using a particular machine with a particular floppy drive. If it's broken for a particular drive, I'm not sure what I'd do to fix it, though. Basically, no nzero means "I didn't do it", and zero means "I did it". That is to say, Windows 95 and Windows 98 are not supported.

Introduction from the manual: "Archon is a cont est of action and strategy between opposing forces wrought from myth and legend. The Light Side and the Dark Side are equal in force, balanced i n strength. Though they are not identical, their goals are the same. Eac h side exists to conquer, by eliminating all of the opposing pieces or c ontrolling the five power points." The game is an am azingly original blend of chess, fantasy strategy, puzzle, and even a bi t of action. Simila r to The Sentinel, Archon is one of the rarest of all classics: addictiv e gameplay that truly stands the test of time. Graphics and controls are poor on the PC version, though (CGA only), and so I really suggest tryi ng to get hold of the original Atari or C64 release, or take a look at t he updated Archon Ultra released years after this one (although unfortun ately the true sequel, Archon II, was never released for the PC). Archon Ultra is a significantly enhanced versio n of the original classic Archon by Electronic Arts. In it, two-players battle each other in a game that resembles chess in visual appearance, b ut with many RPG-style features and requirement of reflexes thrown in. The gameplay itself, like Archon, is similar to chess in many ways. A boa rd with alternating black and white squares is set up in which each side (light and dark) takes turns moving a single character. Each character has a certain amount of squares to which it can transport, and some char acters can fly over others instead of being forced to walk around them. Unlike chess, the characters found in the light and dark sides are compl etely separate from each other. The players on the light side represent "good" creatures (eg Phoenix, Djinni, "good and noble" Wizard) while the dark side is composed of evil beings (eg Dragon, Shapeshifter, Goblin, and of course the "evil and deceitful" Sorceress). When a character from one side lands on a square occupied by a character from the opposing si de, they both will enter a large arena and fight. An interesting variati on (which was present in the original Archon) is that some of the colors on the game board will change color slowly, alternating between white a nd black as the game progresses. If a battle is fought on a black piece, a dark and fire-pervaded landscape will serve as the arena, and the evi l character will be automatically granted extra hit points. If a conflic t ensues on a white piece, a peaceful and serene forest will be the batt leground, where the good character will enjoy the same advantage. In addition to more gameplay options than the original and excellent VGA graphics, Archon Ultra also offers modem pla, which is very smooth even at 2400 baud. It is a shame that SSI did not convert Archon II to PC ver sion and include it with Archon Ultra, but that's a minor point consider ing all the significant enhancements in this version. While Archon Ultra is more of an evolution rather than a revolution that its predecessor w as, it manages to retain all of the elements that made Archon a masterpi ece, and improve on them. VMware's Back > Virtual Floppy Driver Virtual Floppy Driver This is a virtual floppy disk driver for Windows NT / 2000 / XP. You can mount a floppy image file as a virtual floppy drive and directly access the contents -- view, edit, rename, delete or create files, format the virtual floppy, launch a program on the virtual floppy... TOP Version 20 beta preview I've been working on this new version of the VFD for some time and have managed to put together the device driver, the command line utility and the brand new shell extension by now. However it seems I won't be able to have enough time to get the GUI program finished for at least a few months from now. So I decided to publish the current kind-of-working stuff as a beta preview. Changes are not written back to the image file (discarded on close). IMZ) support (RAM disk mode only) * Formatting virtual media New images created with VFD are pre-formatted. Enables to format virtual media when Windows' format doesn't work. The same drive letter is assigned the next time the driver starts. Drag-and-drop an image file with the right button to the virtual drive icon to open it. dll (driver control and shell extension library) CAUTION! No document is available for now - not even a readme file. I hope VFD HELP would provide enough information to use them. Also please write to me if you are interested in (unfinished, untidy) source code.
