3/8 I have a mod_rewrite question that I think should be straight-
forward but I think I'm not getting something.
I have a virtual server with some root, say /home/user/public_html/
and in there I have two subdirs, say /app1/ and /app2/
        and i want the following:
        http://mysite/app1   -->   /home/user/public_html/app1

8/3 VMWare + Windows XP + Validation question. I need to test stuff with
Service Pack 3 installed. I have a valid key that I own (yeah yeah I
actually *bought* a copy, please don't flame me for supporting evil
M$). Is it possible to register the key once, and then duplicate it
for testing purposes? Will Windows or Microsoft detect copies and
        disable the rest the copies?

7/20 For those who care btw, it looks like eclipse is now A Standard Tool
at UCB ugrad cs, probably replaced emacs. Furthermore, people get
angry at seeing Makefiles, (since eclispe takes care of that). I
guess it's just a sign of the times.
\_ The more people at my work use eclipse the less the code is
managable in emacs. I'm not sure which application's fault

        Ruby sucks.
\_ Looks no different than python/perl/etc. It's a scripting language
that needs a virtual machine if it is ever going to be fast. The
scary thing is how much modern computing doesn't need stuff to
be fast, especially when dealing with web applications. There's

5/7     What's a good reverse port forwarding for a PC(inside firewall) ->
Unix, so that I can VNC into the Unix that gets forwarded to

2/13 Question about memory relocation:
These days most h/w has a relocation register. Could the relocation
address be stored on disk or in kernel memory vs. in a register? Yes,
that would be slow but is it possible? Do you *need* a relocation
register or does it exist purely for performance reasons? I was
reading some paper written by IBM in the 1960s that seemed to

12/18 Are any of you using any kind of scheme involving, e.g., running
multiple copies of web browsers in virtual machines so that the
copy you use for random web browsing is isolated from the copy you
use for financial transactions? What other sorts of schemes like
this are people using that aren't a total PITA? P.S. I am talking
mainly about Windows; on Unixes you could always run stuff under

12/4 A question to you old crufy alumni: So lately we've suggested
VMs, and been asked why it's necessary. We've suggested top-of-the-line
hardware and been told we don't need that much power. So I'd like to
ask -- what exactly do you think the CSUA is supposed to _be_?

12/3 Are any of you CSUA alums working at Intel? Is it possible that we
might be able to hit Intel up for donated/partially donated (reduced
price) Core i7 Xeons when they come out? Who would be a good person
to contact about something like that? We're of course willing to put
out for them - perhaps we'll tattoo an Intel logo on toulouse if that's
what they want :-p -- steven

11/29 I'm experimenting with virtualization, and as a poor college student
I'm wondering what the best alternatives for virtualization are, and
how best to cut my teeth on messing with non-linux platforms (or I
guess interesting stuff on Linux would work too). Right now I've got
FreeBSD7 running on KVM on my home computer (on a Core 2 Quad), and am
somewhat at a loss as to how to use it. (More details: bridged
