Post or Read Comments & Feedback Stephen Wynkoop SQL Server for Linux, Unix-based Systems, Xbox (4/1/2005 newsletter) Microsoft Announces SQL Server for Linux, Unix-based Systems, Support for Xbox Development - SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (SNews) April 1, 2005 Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer today announced that Microsoft wil l be releasing a version of SQL Server for the Linux/Unix operating syst ems concurrent with the release of Microsofts flagship SQL Server 2005 p roduct. The expanded platform and audience for SQL Server will also inc lude the Xbox development platform, paving the way for a completely inte grated consumer applications development platform. We thought it was important to address the Linux/Unix marketplace, provid ing a key database for their use on that platform as applications are de veloped and deployed, Ballmer said in an interview today. In addition, with the Xbox development opportunities, its clear that SQL Server is th e database platform that can now be used in the full customer lifecycle from business-related applications support to consumer and gaming applic ations, the full line of SQL Server offerings will be available to suppo rt those needs. This includes full Reporting Services integr ation into the consumer platform, and the ability to interface local Xbo x needs with the new Xbox Live database enhancement APIs. Microsoft will be developing components for the Visual Studio development environments to support the new interfaces to SQL ServerS "Soma" Soma segar, Corporate Vice President for Microsofts Developer Division said w ere really excited having a comprehensive platform to develop against op ens up all sorts of options for developers.
