5/8 Hello everyone! This is Josh Hawn, CSUA Tech VP for Spring 2012.
About 2 weeks ago, someone brought to my attention that our script
        to periodically merge /etc/motd.public into /etc/motd wasn't
running. When I looked into it, the cron daemon was running, but
there hadn't been any root activity in the log since April 7th. I
looked into it for a while, but got lost in other things I was

11/16 We'll be taking all CSUA machines offline in the near future for a Soda
Hall server room reorganization (we're being moved to a neighboring
server cabinet). Downtime will hopefully be minimal. --jordan
\_ Thanks for all your work keeping the machines running! It's
been awesome having soda actually working again.
\_ Update: this is tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

11/21 Lifehacker's recommending Dreamhost as a personal web hosting service.
Apart from csua, who do you guys use? --erikred
\_ What do you want to use it for? Do you need CGI or PHP? My
brother worked for Dreamhost and said they are unethical. In
fact, he sued them. This refers to their treatment of customers

Google Wave No More. The people who worked on it were pretty smart.
They wrote up a super awesome OKR with extremely low bar as a measure
of success, exceeded everyone's expectations by going above those
bars, and got big fat bonuses and promotions as a result of their
        planning. Brilliant.

com rigged together a little application using off the shelf part s to display on a web page their car, its exact location and velocity, a s well as the current view out their window. jpg image Panasonic has introduced a folding electri c bicycle. Called the Off Time, the bike can be folded to fit inside o f a cars trunk, go with you on the train, or stashed under your bed for when you need to make a quick getaway. Its lithium-ion battery can driv e for about two and a half hours, but I presume that even if it runs out , you can still pedal it like a normal bike. jpg While this should appear as a strikingly bad idea to the lot of you, Im sure theres one of two extreme folk out there, sa livating at the RollerCyclea 15 hp engine that ups your max speed, on blades, to 25 mph. Honestly, I have not the words, except to say Cycle a t your own peril. jpg Although its far from the first company to put computers in cars, I hadnt thought about exactly how useful Verizons EV-DO network would be to driving until I saw this work from VeaLink. Just the ability to quickly use Google Maps alone would be invaluable (especially when s omeone builds a simple GPS coordinate interface for Maps). VeaLink has also wisely hooked the PCs up to the vehicles remote start w iring, so you can turn your car computer on from inside the house and le t it get a head start on syncing all your music and video content. jpg Scandinavian design firm Wallenius Wilhelmsen went ahea d and designed a zero-emissions cargo ship that takes advantage of wind, solar, wave and hydrogen-based power. Apparently, the firm is hoping to see features of the concept appearing in ships by 2010, but a complete version likely will not be realized until 2025. While this concept is designed to haul automobiles, Im eager to see an oil-tanker version, fo r obvious, ironic reasons. jpg A British hydrogen company is showing off this ENV prototyp e motorcycle this week as a showcase for their CORE fuel cell platform . Theres no plans to produce the ENV, but thats okaywhere would you g et the hydrogen? jpg Do you remember the last time you locked your bike at a public post and took the seat, only to come back two hours later and find both the wheels have also been removed? Simply swipe your smart card, enter your PIN and watch as your b ike is hoisted up into the glass canopy, filling out a bike rain forest of sorts. Perfect for bike sharing or rental programs, the system was fi rst installed in Geneva and is powered by solar power, but your bike is still accessible 24/7. jpg Riding trends as only morning shock jock DJs can, this Pimped Out Shopping Cart will be making some hobo out there very happy . Built as a promotional tool for a morning radio show called Lex and T erry, the shopping cart is filled with a laundry list of street surviva l and entertainment options, including GPS, an alarm, 80 LED lights, a r efrigerator and heater, and a LCD TV. The whole thing is solar powered, too, pumping juice into an Optima battery for use throughout the cold, d ark night. The blue powder-coated cart will be given away on the air at some point i n the near future. The modification was done by Techni-Car, who looks like they had a lot of fun doing it. jpg Joel is out gallivanting across New Orleans and has presuma bly found his way to CTIA, where hell be reporting from soon. Meanwhile , hes left the lot of you in my (allegedly) capable hands, with this me ssage: Caveat emptor. Plustech Oy (a John Deere subsidiary) has unleashed their Walking Machinean indisp ensable, six-legged log-hauling machine that I assume can eat orphanages and other small buildings with ease. In reality, the Walking Machine is use for foresting and can determine ground pressure and adjust the mach ines six shoes appropriately, allowing it to traverse various terrains. Its also able to detect and avoid obstacles, simply stepping over thin gs in its path. Brilliantly controlled with a single joystick (and a com plex computer navigation system), the Plustech website has some videos o f the Walking Machine in action. jpg image There are two new models of TomTom GO GPS syst ems on the table, both of which appear to be fairly well-featured. The 700 and 300 follow suit of previous TomTom GO models, but the 700 e liminates the SD slot and adds an integrated 25GB hard drive as well as Bluetooth functionality. Th e 300, on the other hand, remains with the SD slot and lacks Bluetooth a nd remote control. No word on price yet, but Im pretty sure it is still cheaper to buy a road atlas. Update: David from ChaitGear qualifies: Just to clarify, the TomTom GO 300 >does< have BT built in, but only usa ble for GPRS comms for the PLUS data service whereas the GO 700 has t he full handsfree tech. Actually, the entire 2005 range has support for the PLUS service (as theyre all BT based): TomTom GO 700, TomTom GO 5 00, TomTom GO 300, TomTom MOBILE 5, TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 and TomTom RIDER . p edal taxis, Toyota has built an entire bus that runs on fuel cells. Cal led the Intelligent Multimode Transit System (its a hybrid), these buse s of the future are poised and prepped to move people around the World E xpo without contributing too much to our atmospheres declining health. jpg FCS Companys Hexatech Racing Simulator is just wh at you need (racing-enthusiast-cum -millionaire that you are) for that s pare Great Room in your summer home. The 170 square-foot system consists of a race car cockpit with a force feedback steering wheel, and, before I forget, a driver seat and visual system mounted on a six-degrees of f reedom Electric Motion platform. The Hexa moves across all axes near-eff ortlessly, in all directions and all rotations. This means that the syst em can impart on you over two Gs of acceleration forces at its whim whi le you sit immersed in its 3 x 23 TFT display system and THX Dolby surr ound sound system. Launched at Six Flags Holland, its safe to assume th ese arent exactly meant for consumer purchase. However, their three-min ute video totally sells the experience and I absolutely want one, even i f it doesnt come with that swanky progressive neo-lounge soundtrack pla ying in the background.
