3/14 My girlfriend has one of those "USB flash drive" "stick like things"
with 128MB ... and it has suddenly become "write" protected, and
nothing can be "written" to it. Looking at "properties" doesn't
seem to offer any "check boxes" that I thought could have caused
the "problem". Anyone "seen" a "problem" like this before?
\_ Most of these things have a physical write-protect switch.
           \_ Not on this one.
\_ Does it use a special driver with write-protect ability?
Did your OS mount it read-only?
                 Do you have write permission?
\_ I borrowed it one day and used it on my home computer
which is win2k ntfs while her laptop is winxp fat.
seems that it has a problem after that. guess I'll
bring it back to my home computer to see if it will
work from there, even don't I don't see why that
would cause a problem in the first place.
\_ Did you properly eject it from the win2k machine? If
not, you probably corrupted the filesystem.
\_ But I can't even format it now.
\_ I've had some problem with a CF card that 'lost' all the pictures,
nearly gave me an heart attack. I got the files back via
"chkdsk /f drive:" Again use with caution.
\_ hey! what's with all the double quotes?! are you trying to be
           funny? - op
           \_ yes. -quoter
              \_ you're failing.

9/21 are you guys really all using win7 in some way now?
\_ Yes. In my company, we have upgraded all our machines for
development, QA and other office use (HR, Finance, Receptions, etc.)
from WinXP to Win7 a few months ago. Our products now primarily
support Win7/Win2008 and secondarily support WinXP/Win2003.
           \_ Any weird gotchas support-wise?

4/28 Win 3.1 was more widely adopted than Win 3.0. Win XP (5.1) was more
widely adopted than Win 2k (5.0). Now it looks like Win 7 (6.1) is
going to be more widely adopted than Vista (6.0). Is this a trend on
        Microsoft x.0 versions being bad?
        \_ duh.

8/3 VMWare + Windows XP + Validation question. I need to test stuff with
Service Pack 3 installed. I have a valid key that I own (yeah yeah I
actually *bought* a copy, please don't flame me for supporting evil
M$). Is it possible to register the key once, and then duplicate it
for testing purposes? Will Windows or Microsoft detect copies and
        disable the rest the copies?

7/28 Does it make sense to defragment disks on VMWare? My 80GB disk
on VMWare isn't really using 80GB, it just uses what it needs.
Will defragment do anything to it?
\_ If you want to speed up disk operation in your VM, it's best to
defragment the disks in your VM, then defragment the disk on your
host machine where the VM files are.

11/29 I'm experimenting with virtualization, and as a poor college student
I'm wondering what the best alternatives for virtualization are, and
how best to cut my teeth on messing with non-linux platforms (or I
guess interesting stuff on Linux would work too). Right now I've got
