Membership since 1913 Photo of Alan Greenspan Alan Greenspan Chairman Alan Greenspan took office June 19, 2004, for a fifth term as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Greenspan als o serves as Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee, the System's principal monetary policymaking body. He originally took office as Chair man and to fill an unexpired term as a member of the Board on August 11, 1987. Greenspan was reappointed to the Board to a full 14-year term , which began February 1, 1992, and ends January 31, 2006. He has been d esignated Chairman by Presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush. He received a BS in economics (summa cum laude) in 1948, an MA in economics in 195 0, and a PhD in economics in 1977, all from New York University. G reenspan also has performed advanced graduate study at Columbia Universi ty. From 1974 to 1977, he served as Chairman of the Presid ent's Council of Economic Advisers under President Ford, and from 1981 t o 1983, as Chairman of the National Commission on Social Security Reform . Greenspan has also served as a member of President Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board, a member of Time magazine's Board of Economists, a senior adviser to the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity, and a cons ultant to the Congressional Budget Office. His previous Presidential appointments include the President's Foreign In telligence Advisory Board, the Commission on Financial Structure and Reg ulation, the Commission on an All-Volunteer Armed Force, and the Task Fo rce on Economic Growth. Greenspan served as a corporate director for Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa); His noncorporate positions have included Member of the Board of Trustees, The Rand Corporation; Member of the Board of Overseers, Hoover Institution (at Stanford Univer sity); and Vice Chairman and Trustee, Economic Club of New York. Greenspan has served as Chairman of the Conference of Business Econom ists, President and Fellow of the National Association of Business Econo mists, and Director of the National Economists Club. Greenspan has received honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Pennsylva nia, Leuven (Belgium), Notre Dame, Wake Forest, and Colgate universities . His other awards include the Thomas Jefferson Award for the greatest p ublic service performed by an elected or appointed official, presented b y the American Institute for Public Service, 1976 (joint recipient with Dr. election as a Fellow of the America n Statistical Association, 1989; and he was the first recipient of the Gerald R Ford Medal for Distinguished Public Service, 2003.
