2/4 "The United States would dispatch 690,000 troops and 2,000
warplanes if war breaks out on the Korean peninsula, according
to a South Korean defense policy paper released Friday"
\_ That seems like a lot. Anyone know how many troops we have?
\_ I think if you count everyone in training, on leave, resupply,
and doing 'back end' work it's about that many. We have 125k
active duty in Iraq and that's a stretch.
\_ We won't need troops soon. We'll have armored death robots
              within a few years. -John
\_ I think we should make Imperial Walkers. Why not? Unlike
missile defence I'm pretty sure they would actually work.
\_ I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords.
        \_ Link?
\_ doubtful. Marines fall short of recruitment, and is in trouble:
           http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/02/03/marines.recruiting.ap
\_ Did you actually read your own link? It doesn't say they're
in trouble. It says they were 84 recuits short of their
3270 recruit goal in January, but they were 184 over
               the goal for that quarter.
\_ There are only 450k active duty soldiers in the entire Army,
so that seems like a bit of a stretch. I am sure we would
activate the Reserves and pull in the IRR though and they
           number at least another 1/2M.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Marine Corps fell short of its monthly recruiting goal in January for the first time in nearly 10 years, officials said Th ursday. While it was only a one-month slip and the Marines say they remain on tra ck to meet their recruiting target for the full year, the January number s reflect a broader reality for the military: Recruiting is more difficu lt because of the highly publicized US war casualties in Iraq. "Now we're seeing parents resisting" the sales pitch of recruiters becaus e they worry that their son or daughter will wind up in a war zone, said Maj Dave Greismer, spokesman for Marine Corps Recruiting Command. "What we're doing is working with the parents more," he added. "Whereas b efore it may have taken one visit and they would accept, now it may take a recruiter two, three, four" visits. In some cases parents of 17-year- olds, who are a prime target of recruiters, are insisting that their son or daughter wait until age 18, when recruits no longer need parental ap proval to join. In January the Marines signed up 84 fewer recruits than their goal of 3,2 70. That was the first time they fell short for a month since July 1995, which also was the last year in which the Marines missed their full-yea r recruiting goal. Greismer stressed that although the number of new enlistment contracts in January was short of the goal, the Marines managed to make the January quota of recruits sent to boot camp because some had been signed up prev iously. For the October-January period, the Marines sent 10,222 new recruits to b oot camp, or 184 more than their target number, Greismer said.
