Roberts LOS ANGELES (AP) - Johnny Carson, the "Tonight Show" TV host who served A merica a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. "Mr Carson passed away peacef ully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associate d Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurab le. Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death or th e location. The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his audience. His wealth, the adoration of his guests - particularly the many young com ics whose careers he launched - the wry tales of multiple divorces: Cars on's air of modesty made it all serve to enhance his bedtime intimacy wi th viewers.
Johnny lived to be 79 years old, but Fox News had to let everyone know th at Johnny was 'a life long smoker." There was NO reason for Fox News to tell the general public that!
View Replies To: SheLion I just heard an info-babe on the noon news say that "the Carson show form at spawned a long history of similar shows. The majority of the public t unes to these shows for news, rather than network news;
View Replies To: EggsAckley Well, that happens to be the truth according to numerous sources. Many pe ople claim to get their news from Leno, Letterman and The Daily SHow, ye t don't watch news programs.
View Replies To: SheLion I was working on a project in my gun room, and heard the EXACT same thing on the radio I had on. We get FoxNews Radio news on one of the local af filiates. They ended the news clip with "Once again Johnny Carson, a lif e long smoker, Dead at the age of 79 from emphysema" I am calling the station to complain. How rude to try and make a "stateme nt" when someone dies.
View Replies To: Roberts Sorry freepers, but I never found him amusing. L ots of laughs from the audience, but I never laughed with the sound trac k Never the less, RIP.
View Replies To: eXe I am calling the station to complain. How rude to try and make a "stateme nt" when someone dies. Johnny was a big drinker as well, but you sure don't hear Fox News commen ting on THAT!
View Replies To: Roberts Walter's Cronkite's death could have created the same feeling of cultural loss as JC's has. I'll be hard pressed not to ululate upo n hearing of his passing.
View Replies To: al baby vio con diaz amigo The spelling is priceless. All kidding aside he was an icon of by-gone daze (sic) 'a classy celebrit y'. The bad news is you know I'm getting old when I'm a-pinin' for the g ood old days.
View Replies To: SheLion "Johnny was a big drinker as well, but you sure don't hear Fox News comme nting on THAT!" Perhaps if he had died of an alcohol related illness, they would have.
View Replies To: Roberts I may not agree with everything he said and did, but he had talent. My fa vorite was when he would answer the letters before opening them.
View Replies To: An American In Dairyland Paraphrasing same CW song... Don't smoke and you'll probably have a much better quality of life before nature takes it's course.
View Replies To: Touch I'll be hard pressed not to ululate upon hearing of his passing. My ululation will be louder than your ululation when ultra lib old Walter Crankshaft passes this mortal scene.
View Replies To: Howlin As an oncologist, I see every smoking related death as a victory of stupi dity. Sorry, I won't shut up for the likes of a pipsqeak such as yoursel f..
Luv Perhaps if he had died of an alcohol related illness, they would have There's that related word again. My best friend gave up smoking after his doctor and family convinced him he would die of lung cancer if he didn't. A year after he quit smoking h e died of prostate cancer.
View Replies To: Roberts Classic demonstration of the difference betwen the old-timey, neocommunis t, left wing media and cable (including the moribund CNN). All cable has had nothing but Johnny Carson for 3 hours while the commies have just m entioned in "comming attractions."
View Replies To: mugs99 Smoking is responsible for 82% of chronic lung disease in this country, i ncluding emphysema. A small number of people with emphysema have a rare inherited form of the disease called alpha I-antitrypsin (AAT) deficienc y-related emphysema, or early onset emphysema. This form of disease is c aused by an inherited lack of a protective protein called alpha I-antitr ypsin (AAT).
View Replies To: An American In Dairyland Can I take it to the bank? Let me lead my life and you can do whateve r you want with yours. As long as smokers have to pa y higher health insurance premiums, I'm cool.
Fox News had to let everyone know that Johnny was 'a life long smoke r"> Lighten up. If he would have died from liver probl ems they, and all of the other networks, would have said he was a heavy drinker.
Most doctors of any specialty make their living off of the foibles, weakness es and sheer stupidity of their patients, since many high-maintenance di seases and conditions are caused by people's living habits and wrong cho ices. The irony is that if everybody followed their doctor's advice, man y doctors wouldn't have a job, or else it sure as hell wouldn't pay as w ell as it does. You know, there's ways, and then there's ways, to get your point across, and you're not getting your point across against the evils of smoking by plastering "the idiot brought it on himself" (which seems to be your so le message) when the subject is the death of Johnny Carson. If you reall y wanted to persuade people to your point of view, you wouldn't act so u gly. You can say p ractically anything, and nobody you know in real life is the wiser.
View Replies To: BiscuitEater If Barney Frank were to have AIDS then when dies I figure the media will say he died of AIDS? Will it be reported that Ted Kennedy died beca use he was an avid drinker?
View Replies To: Roberts I'll miss Johnny Carson, he was a class act, even when he was pulling off some sort of slightly off-color gag, (love the routine when he had Doll y Parton on his show and he admitted that he'd "give up a year's pay for a look under there"), he did a Ronald Reagan impersonation that was abs olutely killer, and I don't care if he was conservative, liberal, middle -of-the-road or what, he was a funny man and made me laugh. I hope he en joyed every puff of tobacco, every drink, every lovely lady he romanced, I hope he savored each and every sea mile he logged, and we will not se e his kind of entertainer come our way again. As he is ushered into the presence of Almighty God, I just know *somebody * will find a way to say "Heerrrrrrre's JOHNNY!"
View Replies To: Roberts I am very sorry to hear of this. I'm too young to have seen Johnny's show firsthand, but through the magic of DVD I have caught up on a few of hi s legendary moments. Anybody who doesn't appreciate his significant acco mplishment in TV (tops in his spot for 30 straight years, and a true cul tural unifier) just doesn't know anything about Television. so many great moments or gifts to the rest of u s His favored late-night stepchild, David Letterman, is now the grand old m an of Late Night, and I will stay up late tomorrow to hear Letterman spe ak of his (and all of ours) friend in comedy. It will be the kind of fun eral that Carson deserves, I can just bet on it.
