\_ Firewire has a way better plug. USB upside-down looks the same
unless you look inside the plug. What a stupid design.
\_ From a usability perspective Firewire wins hands down. On
interface, on cpu load, etc. Unfortunately USB is cheaper.
\_ Firewire has less overhead and in practice is faster.

11/12 Server nerds, CCC for mac is totally awesome. is there somethng
as cool and friendly for PC or unix?
\_ Hi. "CCC" is a free mac program known as "Carbon Copy Cloner".
If you use a Mac, and have some sort of external usb or firewire
drive, I recommend you spend 15 minutes downloading it and
setting it up. You can easily make a backup set up your data,

8/25 I have a portable USB HD (2.5") that I built myself with WD HD
and an enclosure. On some systems it won't power on via the
USB cable, it'll try to spin up, but does not successfully
spin up. Could it be those machines do not provide enough
power via the usb output? On one machine that fails to power
up, I tried the fire-wire cable, it powered up fine. It also

cd and make it pretend to be an external firewire drive?
Is there a way to do this with a PC? Maybe there
is a cd I can boot the PC with to do this?
\_ You don't need a system install cd to do this. You just hold down
the `T' key while booting. -dans

it possible to get a terminal connection from the dell box to the
laptop? The dell has USB, serial, PS/2, and VGA (no firewire).
        Any suggestions appreciate, thanks.

11/21 Need recommendation for a small form factor network file server
to connect a PC laptop and a MAC laptop at home. About 500 gigs
to 1 T. I'm looking at the Maxtor Shared storage series and also at
the "Buffalo terastation". Can somebody recommend other brand names?
This is for home use, performance is not critical but it has to be
reasonably priced. General purpose PC is out of the question because
