BELFAST (Reuters) - A Northern Ireland bank robbed of 265 million pounds in a raid blamed on the IRA says it is transferring all staff working i n the targeted cash centre to new jobs for their own safety. The announcement came on the day a bank worker kidnapped during last mont h's robbery described how he was told his family would be killed if he d id not help the gang raid the vaults at Northern Bank's headquarters in central Belfast. "This action is being taken in the interests of staff," said a Northern B ank spokesman. Some workers fear their personal details could be in the hands of the robbers. Irish finance union IBOA said it was in discussions with the bank about m oving the 40 staff. "IBOA members throughout Northern Bank, and particularly in the cash cent re, have experienced a traumatic few weeks ... and a number of staff are genuinely concerned about their safety and well-being," said general se cretary Larry Broderick. Northern Irish police and the British and Irish governments say they beli eve the IRA carried out last month's heist, one of the biggest in UK his tory, dealing a severe blow to efforts to hand running of the province b ack to divided local politicians. Unionists say the raid has bolstered their determination not to sit in a power sharing government set up under a 1998 peace deal with the IRA's p olitical ally Sinn Fein until the guerrilla group disarms and disbands. Chris Ward, 23, who worked as a supervisor in the cash centre, described in an interview published on Tuesday in the Belfast-based Irish News how his ordeal began when two men tricked their way into his home the night before the robbery. "They said 'Look Chris, we know everything about you and your family,'" h e told the paper. "'We are going to take you away for 24 hours and if yo u co-operate everything will be okay. Later, after the rest of the staff had been sent home, he and assistant m anager Kevin McMullan -- whose family were also being held hostage -- ca rried boxes of cash out to a van waiting in a loading bay behind the ban k They had been ordered by the gang to tell security staff they were taking rubbish to be collected by a service company. No one has been arrested or charged over the December 20 robbery, and non e of the cash has been recovered. Northern Bank plans to withdraw all its paper currency in an bid to thwar t efforts to launder the cash, but police say 10 million pounds of the h aul is untraceable because it is in used notes or notes for which the ba nk did not keep serial numbers.
