1/4 [WARNING: Libertarian love-fest below]
         \_ Warning: communist dumbass above
\_ thanks for the case in point, false dichotomy, and needless
               invective
\_ What makes you think there was any dichotomy? Or that the
invective was needless? Here's another question: which of
the following responses are "libertarian love-fests"?
        Updated govt. aid figures:
        Australia: $765m
        Germany: $680m
        Australia: $810m
        Germany: $674m
        Japan: $500m
        US: $350m
\_ Australia's up to $1b now. The bidding is amazing.
\_ Politicizing disaster relief is sickening.

\_ What? Isn't Sri Lanka a Buddhist country instead of Muslim?
\_ *cringe* Given Sri Lanka's history of "disappearing" rebels
and collaborators (i.e., from both sides), the second thought
that crossed my mind on hearing of the disaster was "Will
either side take advantage of the confusion to get rid of
rivals?" The same thought could well be applied to Aceh in
                 Indonesia.
\_ Egeland, the UN Humanitarian Chief, calls this "competitive
              compassion".
\_ How much has been given privately? How much does it cost for our
carrier group and soldiers to be over there helping?
           \_ ssshhhh!
\_ Sorry, didn't mean to feed the trolls.
\_ Yeah, but do the Indonesian people think that way?
              \_ Who cares?
\_ Americans give privately, not through their government. (As it
should be.) Why don't you add up the contributions to, say, the
           International Red Cross by country?
\_ Huh, well, personally I believe that forced charity is the
              only real charity.

1/20 So I want to give some money to Haiti relief funds and my employer
        \_ SOCIALISM
is willing to match it, but I am not really that big a fan of
The Red Cross (they take your donations and then spend them
however they like, not neccessarily on what you gave it to them for).
Who else is a good charity? UNICEF?

1/4 Why the fascination with blowing up airplanes? Airports have tight
security. It doesn't seem worth it. It's far easier to derail a
train or set off explosives in a crowded place like a theater or
sporting event. As many or more people will be killed and it will
still make the news. I don't get why all of our security, and
apprently much of the terrorist's resources, is focused on airplanes.

2/9 GOP may be "winning" stimulus debate on TeeVee, but they're losing quite
        badly with the public:

says we'll get out of the recession without a stimulus.

Nations from all over the world have been quick to offer their assistance to the many countries devastated by last week's tsunami. The Israelis, as you might expect, have a lot of people who are quite skilled in rapid crisis response and have offered their help to Asia. Apparently allowing Israelis into t heir country would violate some sort of abstract political point they ar e trying to prove. Snubbing Israeli offers of assistance is a fairly common way in which Mus lim nations can grandstand within the international community. When Iran had that big earthquake last year their government did the exact same r outine. gif Filibuster Cartoons version 30 - Design copyright 2003 Jaco Joubert - Al l original images copyright 2001-2003 JJ McCullough - Non-original image s copyright their respective owner.
