12/21 Hey fellow moderately rich bastards. The Samsung 193P is on sale at
http://jr.com for $500 after rebate. I just put in my order with next-day
shipping. See http://newegg.com or http://pricegrabber.com to see other prices.
        http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3967280
\_ How can it have a 4:3 AR with a native resolution of 1280x1024?
(And yes, I am aware of the existence of rectangular pixels, but
I was under the impression that no one sane makes LCDs with
           non-square pixels.)
\_ I don't get what's so special about this monitor with the exception
of slightly higher contrast ratio. Am I missing something?
           \_ http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/lcd-guide.html
              http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2289
There is consensus that the 2001FP (20" Dell) is better still.
        \_ Fully review here: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2024&p=1
\_ It's not better except it's bigger. If you read the comments
on that monitor, 193P has better features and they rated it
                 higher in the "subjective" analysis.
\_ Yer right. I should say, "some say that" the 2001FP is
better still because it's 1600x1200 and has all the groovy
                    inputs.
        \_ Full review here: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2024&p=1
           Note this comparison:
           http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1974&p=7
        \_ You can get the Dell 20" wide 2005fpw for $622. Don't
bother with the samsumg for $500. Check
http://www.techbargains.com for the coupon code. I am ordering
one, no rebates, no fuss, and 20". If you can afford $500,
you can afford $622, believe me, the difference between
           $1600x1050 and 1280x1024 is big.
\_ Do you expect any problems with widescreen?
\_ I will let you know when I receive mine. :) So far I haven't
heard any problems with the wide screen. It works better for
DVDs and photos taken with digital SLR, you actually get more
                 pixels than 1600x1200 but shrinked....
\_ What happens when you want to drive it with a 2 yr old
notebook with Intel chipset graphics? (how does it
                    interpolate to 1680x1050?)
\_ I'm trying to decide this too... I could get this for $610
                 shipped with my coupons.
\_ Actually if you call Dell Small Business, they may
give you a 35% off coupon. That will bring the
overall price to ~ $560 shipped with tax. Hella of
a deal. Just ordered mine. The best price I can
find online is the 30% off for small business, but
with tax and shipping, which totals to about $620.
But you have to call them, as the $35% off coupon
is not listed anywhere. Check this thread
                    http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1026999131
\_ You got free shipping too? Well, I went ahead and
ordered my crappier deal and will call tomorrow to
bitch or cancel if I can't squeeze out any more money.
           \_ What if the 193P is only $414 ?
              http://www.hwextreme.com/deals.shtml
\_ Are you talking about the Dell E193FP? I don't see the 193P.
\_ you are right. my bad.
\_ This item has now gone offline. (You need to call them or
go to a bricks&mortar store.) -op

Oleg Artamonov 10/26/2004 | 02:58 PM This guide is offering you a detailed description of various LCD monitor parameters, which are essential for comparative analysis, as well as the measuring techniques used for each of them. Besides, since the majority of LCD monitor parameters are determined by the type of the matrix the monitor is based on, we will also introduce to you the major four types of contemporary matrices. I mea n a good CRT monitor is always good whatever youre doing with it (workin g with text, processing photographs, playing games and so on), whereas a n LCD monitor thats suitable for games wont suit for handling photos, an d one with an excellent color reproduction would be a bad choice for dyn amic games. cbid=15708&size=336x280&type=html&time=1384881066 Formally, latest LCD monitor models all seem to have technical parameters that allow using them in any area as the manufacturers claim viewing an gles of 160 degrees, a contrast ratio of 500:1, a true representation of all 16 millions of colors that you want to see, and the gap between the specs of different models is seemingly negligible well, can the average human eye, not equipped with measurement tools, tell the difference bet ween the 160 viewing degrees of a good TN+Film matrix and the 170 degree s of a PVA, MVA or IPS matrix? However, theory and practice are more div erse in practice than they are in theory, and if you placed two monitors next to each other say, one with a TN+Film matrix and another with an I PS one you would easily see their parameters to be different visually, e ven if youve never worked with LCD panels before. Im not driving to say that the manufacturers deliberately overstate the c haracteristics of their devices, thus confusing the user (well, sometime s they do, but not too often). I say that its a matter of perspective or what the manufacturers mean by a specific parameter and how they measur e it. Speaking generally, any measurement of any value should start with a prec ise definition of the measurement method and conditions and the applicab ility limits of the result. Without that, the measurement result makes n o sense and has no practical worth. Regrettably, many reviewers and testers, following the latest trend to ge t objective data rather than subjective impressions, forget this simple rule and fall a prey to two common mistakes: they either erroneously reg ard the number theyve got (I say number, but not result because a number can only become a result after all the above-said items are complied wi th) as a real parameter of the LCD monitor, which it is in fact not, or put much emphasis on parameters of secondary importance, which but sligh tly affect the investigated characteristic (for example, color reproduct ion is a complex characteristic which cannot be described by a single pa rameter). The first mistake is often committed when some side factors, s pecific for the particular measurement method, come to the fore, obscuri ng the measured value. The second mistake is often the result of the equ ipment being not capable of measuring the significant parameters right, so the reviewer has to base his/her suppositions on the insignificant pa rameters. An attempt to measure a monitors contrast ratio with the help of a digital camera would be total ly wrong without accounting for the cameras matrixs own noise, the camer as gamma correction (which is performed when saving into any format, exc ept RAW), the backlight noise and other related factors. An error of the second type is an attempt to compare the speeds of two LCD monitors by measuring their making black-to-white transitions. The result would be u seless, even if everything is measured with high precision and correctly , just because it is the response time on gray-to-gray transitions thats more important here, rather than the transition between the two limitin g states. Thus, in order to compare LCD monitors by their specs or by numbers youve got through some tests, it is of paramount importance to understand wha t these numbers mean as well as by which method and under which conditio ns they were arrived at. This article is intended as a comprehensive description of the main param eters of LCD monitors as well as of the typical methods the manufacturer s use to measure them. Then, since the bulk of the LCD monitors properti es is determined by the matrix it is based on, and since there are only four types of the matrix now employed (TN+Film, S-IPS, MVA and PVA), I a m going to describe the distinguishing features of each type of the matr ix. com We have what you are looking for in stock & ready to ship at a great pric e! To make up for that, we decided to look at seven 19" LCDs, just in time for the ho liday season. Recall that 19" LCDs have roughly the same viewing area as 21" CRT monitors, a nd that 17" LCDs have about the same viewing area as 19" CRTs. Productio n costs of LCDs have dropped dramatically over the last 2 years, but CRT s still beat LCDs in the cost versus size debate in the mid-size arena. The 19" and 20" LCD categories slightly differ, however. Although the viewing area on a 19" LCD is roughly equivalent to the viewi ng area on a 21" CRT, LCDs use less power, use digital signal, don't hav e linear convergence issues, weigh considerably less, and put less strai n on your eyes in a well lit environment. The issue of cost that used to deter people away from LCDs has also disappeared. Granted, you get what you pay for, and buying a low end 19" LCD or a 21" CRT generally is not what we would recommend. Today, we ar e going to focus on LCDs that run anywhere from $400 and higher - which is generally the price that you will pay if you wanted a quality CRT mon itor. With the exception of the NuTech L921G, all of our LCDs today were store bought. Most of our mod els today are within the $400 to $500 price range. We plan on looking at them subjectively and quantitatively measuring the performance of each monitor against our industry standard Dell 2001FP. A lmost all of our reviews over the last year have used the Dell 2001FP as a benchmark comparison. So, translating some of the performance that we see today with the performance of past monitors should not be very diff icult.

All of these screenshots are taken w ith DVI inputs on the LCDs. The Matrix Reload, The Matrix - We include these movies into our benchmar k to test full motion video. As expected, the darks were much better on the 213T, but there was still a washed out blue tone. However, compared to our 2001FP, the 213T image looks like a screenshot. Both images were taken from the same position with the same lighting. Even though the two images are dramatically different, do not put all of your faith in them as digital cameras tend to over-exaggerate visual defects. Dell 2001FP Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds - We picked up a new game since our la st benchmark, and in all honesty this is probably one of the better benc hmarking games for an LCD; rich colors, fast motion, excessive contrast everywhere (the game is actually kind of fun to play, too). In any case, even though this is an expanded fantasy card game, MTG:B gives us a lot of opportunity to test motion blur due to its high level of activity. we did not experience any probl ems with the LCD keeping up with the rapid color changes on the screen. Morrowind - Another solid 1600x1200 game we like to test LCD monitors on. Unfortunately, the sky in the game should not be as blue as it shows in this picture. This is partly due to the camera, but also due to the scr een. On our 2001FP the sky is the (correct) grey, but the overall image has a more washed out look to it. Max Payne 2 - Again one of our favorite games to benchmark LCDs because w e get such different results each time we change LCDs. There is a slight blue hue to everything even though we have already calibrated our monit or with the OptiCal software. Even though there are some discrepancies i n the color, the contrast levels are very good; unlike many other LCDs d ark objects on dark backgrounds were difficult to distinguish. While we did notice motion blur, the camera over emphasized the issue due to the shutter rat e For avid gamers there is a noticeable difference between the 213T and the 2001FP, but it is difficult to distinguish. particularly with the constant light to dark imagery ( rapid explosions in dark corridors). Solitaire - For some reason, everyone enjoys our Solitaire benchmark. Ind eed, with all that mind bending, card flipping excitement, its no wonder the most played PC game in history deserves its own benchmark. Dell 2001FP Unlike our other images, do not confuse these image defects with the defe cts in the other pictures. we are ca tching two separate frames in the same image due to the cameras shutter rate. What is not normal is the blurring along the edges of the cursor. You can clearly see how the 2001FP has a crisper cursor; the SIPS panel is more capable for this type of imagery. johngvo n00bie Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Los Angeles Great price on Dell 2005FPW I called Dell up and asked for a good deal on the 2005FPW since I could n ot for the life of me get a 25% off LCD coupon from that stupid Dellf ga me. I ended up talking to Small Business department and the rep there fo und a 35% off coupon that supposedly just entered the system that day an d was unpublished. The first rep I spoke t o would only give it to me for $679 but did offer me a 2001FP for $534. Luckily, I declined that offer and ca lled back because I really wanted the widescreen. Moral of the story: Just call Dell Small Business department and ask them if they can work you a deal. The many vultures over there are circling the threads, sa vaging around looking for a great deal like this to bite on. I got greedy and bought a second 2005 o ver the weekend using a 25% and -$40 stackable. I hope I ain't pushing m y luck and end up getting one of the many faulty ones. You can't beat it and it only took me 35 minutes and 5 different Dell Reps. CopyCat "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our h umanity." Raines8416 Limp Gawd Join Date: Jan 2004 Altima, I am in the exact same boat as you were before you called. How di d you manage to get (some) of the difference made up? I called and attem pted it and I was told that due to the promotions being on different day s they cannot make up the difference on my current order. He actually had only the 25% at first then when I mentioned I was a small business I heard of the 35% he went ahead and hooked me up. He made sur e I was a small business customer, which I suppose is easy enough to fib .
