12/15 I need gift ideas. What are you guys getting for your girlfriends / wives for Christmas? \_ Jewelry, the nice kind. No cubic zirconium. They're just overpriced trinkets, but for whatever reason women go mad for them. I guess the same can be said about males and sports memorabilia. \_ Sports memorabilia? Are you kidding me? Electronics, maybe. Yes, women like jewelry. \_ I was attempting to think of trinkets. I suppose electronics are trinkets to other people. They're a necessary part of everyday work for me since I'm in the hardware business, so the analogy doesn't apply to me. I don't get excited if someone gives me a new laptop, I already own 3 and work on a dozen more on a daily basis. Same goes for PDAs, dvd players (we have more here than one can count), routers, ethernet cables, soldering irons, etc. I had assumed the same for the majority of males at sloda, but I guess I was wrong. Also, electronics aren't really that expensive compared to things like a signed baseball/football/basketball by <insert your favorite player's name>. It's completely useless on a day-to-day basis, but everyone wants one. \_ Mine doesn't. I think she wants a bikini-babe calendar. \_ How about "The Men of Berkeley EECS" calender? \_ Selma: "There go the last vestiges of my heterosexuality." \_ a second girlfriend. \_ a new DVD player that plays DivX files. Now she can watch her collection of MST3K more easily. \_ A Club Med vacation for the both of us. \_ Make her use http://floatingsheep.com/wishlist \_ How about a nice pillow: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6717610/?GT1=5936 \_ Better, earlier, and not M$NBC: http://www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2004-09-29-man-pillow_x.htm http://www.della.us/boyfriend-arm-pillow.html \_ I think that this is the saddest thing I have ever seen. \_ Opera tickets at La Scala or Staatsoper (her pick, busy consultant, no clue when she has time), the trip there, and a nice hotel. \_ Only works if you're into opera. Most of the women I've dated would prefer a basketball game or even bowling than <<YAWN>> opera. Sorry, we're not all new york weenies. \_ Too true. My girlfriend likes theater, musicals, dance, the symphony, and other arts. She hates opera. Yes, she'd go to basketball 100 times before the opera. |

www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6717610/?GT1=5936 One popular item for holiday shoppers is the lap pillow, with skin-colo ured polyurethene calves folded under soft thighs -- a comfy cushion for napping, reading or watching television. The 9,429 yen ($90) pillow, which comes with one red and one black skirt, went on sale in late November and maker Trane Co Ltd says shipments hav e reached 3,000 in just a few weeks. We created this item to help tired people relax, said Makoto Igarashi, Tranes managing director. Care was taken with details such as the softness of the thighs, panty lin es on the pillows backside and wrinkles in the lap of the skirt so as to make the pillow look and feel as real as possible. We thought our main customers would be men in their 20s, but even men in their 60s are buying it, Igarashi said. At stores, lap pillows gather crowds where people poke and pry at the foa m legs. I think this may be good for single men, but it could cause trouble for someone who is married, said Shingo Shibata, a 27-year-old company empl oyee browsing at a toy store which sells the pillow. www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2004-09-29-man-pillow_x.htm In Japan, women can doze with man pillow By Kaori Hitomi, Associated Press NAGAREYAMA, Japan After a long night at work as a radio DJ, Junko Suzuk i likes to snuggle at bedtime and she says she's found the perfect par tner: a man-shaped pillow. By Koji Sasahara, AP Linen maker Kameo's new "Boyfriend's Arm Pillow" which consists of a he adless torso and a stuffed arm that curls around the sleeper might mak e some people uneasy. But not Suzuki, or about 1,000 others in Japan who have bought the pillow , which Kameo says is the first of its kind. "And this pillow ma kes me feel relaxed because I can hold the arm and feel something warm a t my side." Kameo, based in the southern Japanese city of Fukuoka, says the pillow is not only an emotional comfort, but that its shape keeps the body balanc ed by supporting the sleeper from both sides. Sleepers typically curl up in between the body of the pillow and the croo ked arm, with the sleeper's head resting on the pillow's "bicep." "My grandmother used to say that there is nothing more comfortable pillow than human," said Kameo President Tomoki Kakehashi. "So, I thought that maybe women would want to sleep on an arm-shaped pillow." The pillow is only on sale in Japan, where customers can buy one for US$8 0 (Japanese Yen 8,500). Covered in a shirt-shaped pillow cover, it comes in blue, pink or green. For Suzuki, who is estranged from her husband, the pillow has definite ad vantages: It doesn't squirm or thrash in the night, and you know it'll b e there in the morning. "It keeps holding me all the way through," she said in her home outside o f Tokyo. "I think this is great because this does not betray me." So Kameo is working up new models: muscular pillows for sleepers who like their pillows well-built; slender models for those after a more sensiti ve, vulnerable partner. The company also has a prototype for its next big project: a female pillo w for men. This one will be shaped like a woman's lap, with a "skirt" co ver. "I always thought someone's lap would the best pillow for me," said Kakeh ashi. This material m ay not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. |
