www.vulcaniasubmarine.com/THE%20BIONIC%20DOLPHIN.htm THE BIONIC DOLPHIN Doc and Dustys Totally Outrageous Submersible Flying Machine The VASH (Variable Attitude Submersible Hydrofoil) is the first submersib le vehicle to achieve true underwater flight. Dubbed the Bionic Dolp hin by its creators Tom Doc Rowe and Dennis Dusty Kaiser of Redding , California, this unique vessel is capable of high speed and maneuverab ility on the surface and underwater; and can actually leap into the air like its living namesake. While others may claim U/W flight capabilit y, nothing else approaches the functionality of this amazing homebuilt. Being a backyard su bber myself, I can really relate to this. Ive seen truly incredible ma chines come out of modest shops like this one, and I get a big kick out of that because it proves: Whats important is the dream and the driv e: the rest takes care of itself. Dustys a businessma n Neither one are certificated engineers. In their words, We are totally unqualified to be doing what were doing, but were doing it. Slowly, through a process of sculpting, the plug begins to evolve. When people ask them about the engineering used here, the builders say it was a process of Hmmmthat looks about right! Further along: heres a shot of the engine compartment with the cowling r emoved. In use, a turbine compresser will charge the Dolphin with air on the surface, sufficient to enable powered runs of fifteen to thirty s econds duration. The blowholes (yellow object at the upper left) open and close to let air in, or keep water out, as becomes necessary when t raveling above and below the surface. Filled with water , bricks, and an occupant, the Dolphin hull still float s! One gets the impression that, throughout this project, a primary mot ivation was to have fun with it. In this picture t aken during a towing test at Whiskeytown Lake, we see the boat has been named NOLAND 1, in remembrance of Toms son: a beautiful child who all-t oo-soon left this World for better places. Among other things, the future may hold a combination diesel-electric Dol phin with extended underwater capabilities. K eep on living the dream, and inspiring others to do the same. |
www.engadget.com/entry/1994668577945435 Transportation bionic dolphin Ah, the bionic dolphin has arrived to fulfill all our dolp hin-envy needs. A company called Innespace has created Flippers bionic brother (minus a frickin laser beam on its head we had demanded) which they say uses forward momentum and a downward lift of their wings to fly underwater. Their current model, the uncomfortably-named Sweet Virgin A ngel, can perform dolphinish tricks like jumping and barrel rolling, and their next model due in 2005 is gonna be a two-seater so then you too c an join in the water fun. so we can get close to classified instalations disguised as dolphins, now ? Imagine a fleet of armed dolphins s wimming out of portholes in a ship and surrounding enemy ships. There is only one name which could be bet ter and it is "Super Happy A+ Number 1 Sweet Virgin Angel Sparkle Supris e Dolf-tron" 6 Posted Jul 28, 2004, 6:30 PM ET by holophile Seen this before I remember seeing this years ago on "Beyond2000" on the discovery channel .... The biggest problem is that it doesn't actually have neutral buoyan cy. "These positively buoyant vessels use their forward momentum and the downward lift of their wings to literally fly below the water's surface ." That's why the pictures never show it completely submerged and also why t hey literally pop out of the water. com is the place to go to schedule a public performance.
