        \_ Same reasons as why we have fingernails, stones, spears, arrows,
           swords, guns, bombs, cannons.
           \_ Uhm, to help us climb and grip our prey (or tools)?  To attract
              a mate when painted?
              \_ I don't know about you, but purely statistically speaking,
                 I have attracted far more mates when I was not painted than
                 when I was painted.  I am not entirely sure what to infer
                 from this observation, but I am led to assume that it has
                 something to do with the possibility that most women prefer
                 nice shirts & slacks to purple body paint.  -John
