By Clinton P Desveaux Clinton P Desveaux If one buys into the notion of the sovereign state, t hen one must buy into the notion that the first and primary role of the sovereign state is the defence of the geographical borders and the indiv iduals who reside within the sovereign state. An important question should be asked pertaining to Canadas Armed Forces ; The time has come for the collective welfare state activists to seriously think about the mos t important role of the nation, which by the way is not free health care and welfare Now before anyone goes off on a tangent, and starts writing threatening E -Mails directed in my direction, maybe you should ask yourself if you re ally support the military? We have 50 year-old helicopters falling out of the sky, instead of hoveri ng above the ground as science intended Furthermore our helicopters are incapable of defending the crews aboard if ever involved in direct comb at. The main combat and defence weapon Canada has are over flown 30-year old CF-18s, in case you didnt know a great deal of the existing fleet have been grounded due to airframe stress and cracks. Also in case anyone wa s wondering the jets have 2 runway locations: One in Quebec and one in A lberta, this is one of the largest geographical nations on earth with 3 ocean boarders; so if an emergency happened in Newfoundland, it seems hi ghly doubtful any aircraft would arrive on time to act. Canadas infantry and army coverage in times of crisis is an absolute jok e, numerous administrations including the previous one led by Jean Chret ien have gone out of their way to decimate the various army divisions. C anada will be one of the first Western World nations that Im aware whic h plans to completely eliminate and phase out its military tank division in 2005/2006. Add to the fact that we have soldiers being sent out in b asket case desert real estate throughout the Middle East dressed in brig ht green uniforms so they can be picked off one by one. Its so bad in f act I had someone tell me a story about dumping paint on a uniform and t hen rolling around in the sand so that it would stick and dry onto the u niform acting as a poor man version of camouflage. Oh and by the way sto ries have been appearing in various papers that the training facilities in which new soldiers are trained are doing so without bullets for the m achine guns. Submarines are meant to submerge and then float back up like a boat, righ t? Can someone please tell me why we have ancient submarines which are d ead at sea? We have had a number of submarines that have attempted to ma ke crossings of the Atlantic Ocean, and have been stranded around Scotla nd and Ireland now during the last number of years dead in the water. If an emergency occurred in the far north of Canada such as commercial ai rcraft crashing in the Artic region, does anyone believe for one minute that Canada would have the capabilities and equipment required to make a n immediate and fast response for rescue purposes? What is the point in supporting and endorsing a military, if it in fact i s incapable of doing nothing except shovel Volvo driving middle aged yup pie types in Toronto and South end Halifax during snow storms and wind s torm damages?
