University of Central Arkansas, Moo re was asked during Q&A about the "Dan Rather story." After expressing s ome reluctance about saying anything, he told the audience that while ma king Farenheit he had been offered the same fraudulent documents by the same source. According to my correspondent -- BG -- who attended: Moore said he looked into it at the time and concluded that they weren't reliable. Not surprisingly, he really didn't seem to have any sympathy f or Rather's mistake. He mentioned Burkett's name during the discussion, but never said that Burkett was his source. Moore said that he hadn't shared this information publicly before.
Secondly, if someone like Moore, who seemed to be going after everything he could on Bush, didn't trust the documents, why did Dan Rather? Does this mean that if there is a legal investigation into the source of the Killian documents that Moore will be subpoenaed?
replay of Tim Russert and other media typ es being subpoenaed to testify in the Valerie Plame case. By saying that he knows the source of the documents, Burkette or not, he will be dragged into the legal skirmish between CBS News, Burkette, a nd the federal government. Has the federal government opened an investig ation or set up a grand jury yet? But those documents were so controversial that after the election, I'm sure that there will be s ome kind of government investigation and Moore will have to be pursued f or what he knows. I bet he was reluctant to say anything and probably didn't know part of the network of The Washington Note was in the audien ce.
Darci at October 4, 2004 11:35 AM i know rather is no bush shill, and i try to stay away from conspiracy ty pe stuff, BUT, doesn't the story that these documents were actually from the bushies and designed to be exposed, seem more and more plausible?
travy at October 4, 2004 11:36 AM Whether the documents are valid or not, the story against Bush is verifie d, we just don't have all the details. Patty Murray is being accus ed of being in league with Osamma by a barrage of ads from George Nether cut.
S Brennan at October 4, 2004 11:49 AM I don't know travy, to me it seems like this, if true, makes it look like a guy getting burned by a source at least a little, not so much like a GOP plot. its still possible, but he ll, it's still possible that the docs are real. hopefully some people will cut Moore a littl e more slack now, people act like he's this desperate wild-eyed guy who' ll believe anything, its not true at all.
onceler at October 4, 2004 11:50 AM Again, My Moore prove to be the master of promotion, With his DVD release this week this only adds a little more free press to his efforts. Of co urse if he is subpoena even better, He would gladly spend some time in j ail to promote his cause.
Ron at October 4, 2004 12:47 PM Moore knew F9/11 was going to be scrutinized so thoroughly that he refuse d to include any evidence that was in the least bit tendentious. And MM is a "master of promotion," but IMHO he's so aggressive not because he c ovets $$ but due to a strongly-held belief that American freedom is in j eopardy if Bush wins reelection. He's effective in these efforts largely because he's not alone in this be lief. And Ed: doesn't your claim that Moore "lied about Disney" depend on wheth er you think Eisner or Moore is more believable? I want to hear more about the story that was bumped on that fateful night - the Niger uranium documents. Why are the other networks giving CBS a pass on not releasing that important story (under the guise of "not affe cting the election")? Isn't it their duty as a news organization to NOT to withhold newsworthy stories that are well-researched and factually ba sed? By holding off on the story they are committing a crime against journalis m at least as bad as not validating the ANG documents fully enough.
plant false documents pertaining to a story most have already accepted that are easily debunked and will further the myth of the liberal media and really, cast doubt on any documents or gotcha type stories until election day... this administration only makes sense when viewed in the most sinister light.
What it does mean is this: that the efforts to show Bush failed to fulfil l his National Guard duty continues to be unable to produce evidence to back it up, so evidence must be contrived. If I were shown evidence that he did not fulfill his service, it would not shock me.
Jay King at October 4, 2004 01:48 PM Tin-foil Hat time, or making sense in the most sinister light... All the little things that don't make sense with this story make perfect sense if you work from the idea that Rather knew the Doc's were fakes an d also knew that Rove was involved. To catch a con-man, one needs to have the con-man think he's conned you.
sgo at October 4, 2004 01:54 PM If Bush served in Alabama then certainly there are one or two folks who c an prove they served together. Surely Bush isn't the only surviving memb er of his unit in Alabama, is he? It's already documented that Bush was grounded for not taking the physical.
jc at October 4, 2004 02:27 PM This is why blogs are inherently trustworthy: here we have a PARAPHRASE o f what Moore said. The devil is in the details, and I'd much rather have a quote of exactly what Moore said rather than have it filted by someon e else, who may or may not be reliable. In this case, Traditional Media 1, Blogs 0 Oh, and Moore's not legally on the hook for anything: we're not talking a bout the leak of an classified government document.
htm We cannot assume they are "forged" simply because Knox didn't type them. Killian certainly could have typed them as backups, in case Knox' disapp eared (which they DID).

htm" Please note that the document you have linked to above is only a draft an d is only really meant to show that the font used was NOT Times New Roma n There is no definite conclusion that the memos were typed on a typewr iter. It can only be said that they LOOK like they might have been. It w as also originally not meant for public consumption, but has become very public recently. Bolo at October 4, 2004 02:37 PM Two things: No one is questioning the conclusions of 60 Minutes regar ding Bush's ANG service. I have a growing sense that people are weary of the Vietnam-era attac ks on both candidates. We may be righteously indignant, but if the only ones with a stake in the argument are wonks all we're doing is distracti ng from the issues that matter to everyone else. Precisely why I think the Niger story would be important. Laypeople do wa nt to know why there are no WMD in Iraq, and they are interested in who in the administration had prior knowledge of this fact.
Evan Machlan at October 4, 2004 02:40 PM sgo: That tin foil hat fits me perfectly, and ive read others comments believi ng the same thing. It seems way too strange for one of the big 3 network s to act like a gullible neophyte and believe iffy docs without checking them out. They saw "the-most-powerful-virgin-in-America-Karl-Rove's" fi ngerprints on them and figured it would be better to pretend to take the bait, only to later (hopefully) pull him into the water instead.

Evan Machlan at October 4, 2004 02:46 PM Now I'm trying to connect this with the document just dumped by the White House that resembles the Killian memos typographically. Too bad we won't get to the bottom of it be fore November.
