About TeXShop: TeXShop is a TeX previewer for Mac OS X, written in Cocoa. Since pdf is a native file format on OS X, TeXShop uses "pdftex" and "pdflatex" rather than "tex" and "latex" to typeset; these programs in the standard teTeX distribution of TeX produce pdf output instead of dvi output. TeXShop uses TeXLive and teTeX, standard distributions of Tex programs for Unix machines. The distributions include tex, latex, dvips, tex fonts, cyrillic fonts, and virtually all other programs and supporting files commonly used in the TeX world. These distributions are maintained for the Mac by Gerben Wierda, and available below. The latest TeXShop release works with System 102 and above and is required for Panther. Users with System 101 should use TeXShop 119, also available below; it will fix the "blank pdf page" that these users have reported when upgrading beyond TeXShop 119. TeXShop is distributed under the GPL public license, and thus free. LaTeX Documentation TeX is a typesetting program by Donald Knuth, used extensively in mathematics, computer science, physics, economics, and other fields.
dmg (TUG mirror, FTP) the same installer from a mirror at TUG (21 MB) Downloading disk image files is easy. Click on the link and your browser will download the file and produce an icon on the desktop. Double click this icon and a window will open, revealing the appropriate files.
Changes in 135x TeXShop has configuration files for macros, applescripts, key bindings, and the like. After you have used the program for a time, you may want to consider modified configurations from other users.
User Contributions Installing TeXShop To install TeXShop, open the dmg and drag TeXShop to the Applications folder. If you intend to use the program often, drag its icon to the dock. TeXShop will work without further configuration, but it is best to do a few more tasks now. Open the folder "to your Library" and find the folder "texmf" inside it. If you are installing TeX for the first time, drag this "texmf" folder to the Library folder in your home directory. If you are updating TeXShop, your home directory's Library folder may already have a subfolder named "texmf". tex in appropriate subfolders of /Library/texmf matching their locations inside "to your Library." If you are installing TeXShop for the first time, you are done. But if this is an upgrade, you may want to obtain the latest Macros and Templates which come with TeXShop 135. Follow the instructions in the brief IMPORTANT_README file in the distribution to get these new Macro and Template files. The distribution contains a "TeXShop_Folder" with optional files; After installing, users may wish to read "How Do I Configure TeXShop" in the TeXShop help section, available from the Help menu. Installing teTeX/TeXLive Gerben Wierda's i-Installer changed substantially over the summer of 2004. If you do not have version 2652 or later, download i-Installer using the link above before installing teTeX/TeXLive. Version 2652 of i-Installer requires System 102 or later. Open the dmg and drag i-Installer to the Utilities folder inside the main Applications folder. Instead it will download various pieces of teTeX over the internet during the installation procress. You should install the following packages in the following order: * FreeType 2 * libiconv (on System 102 ; To install a package, say "FreeType 2," double click the package name. For some packages this tab will be named "Install & Configure". A window will appear asking you to type an Administrator password. After you provide such a password, installation will begin, often with no further user interaction. In the package window, the "Readme" tab will automatically switch to "Activity" so you can keep track of progress as the package is downloaded over the internet. Then the tab will switch to "Subprocess Output" as the package is unpacked and installed. Finally a dialog will appear notifying you that installation is complete. When you install a package, the downloaded package is stored in the "i-Packages" folder inside your Documents directory. If you later need to reinstall or upgrade, i-Installer checks to see if this local version is up to date. If it is not, i-Installer displays a dialog before installing, with the text "Remote is more recent" and buttons "Update" and "Cancel". Although "Cancel" is the default button, the "Update" button should be clicked to download the latest version before installing. For some packages, you will be asked a few questions during the installation. It is safe to choose the default response in all cases except one. When asked to choose paper size, users in the United States should choose "letter". The TeX package installed at the end is a very large collection of files, fonts, and programs. When installation begins, a dialog appears asking if you want to do a simple or expert install. If you decide to do an expert install, you will be given the option of installing a few extra packages, including "TeX Support: TeX4ht", a package that creates web html files from TeX source, and "TeX Support: Latin Modern Fonts", a package with additional type one fonts. Users with adequate disk space and fast internet access should select all provided packages even though these optional packages may never be used. i-Installer is a complicated program because it can do many things.
Unix has a different philosophy about TeX than earlier distributions on Mac OS 9 Under Unix, a user's personal files, additional style files, and modified standard TeX files are kept separate from the multitude of files in the standard distribution. This makes it easy to upgrade TeX without modifying the user's changes, and it makes it easy for users to remember changes they have made to the system. This location can be searched with the Terminal application but is not visible in the Finder. A symbolic link to the folder has been created in /Library/teTeX. Users can use the Finder to examine files in /Library/teTeX and copy files they want to change from this location to their home directory. When TeX needs to open a file, it searches /Library/texmf first, so if you modify a standard TeX file and place it there, the modified file will be used. The folder structure inside /Library/texmf should mimic that inside /Library/teTeX/share/texmf. TeX will locate any file in /Library/texmf/tex or in a subfolder of this folder. Bibtex will locate any file in /Library/texmf/bibtex or in a subfolder of this folder.
Equation Editor How To Diagnose and Report TeXShop Bugs TeXShop bugs should be sent Richard Koch, or to Koch and Olmes. One way to diagnose typesetting bugs is to typeset from the command line and see if the bug is still present. Additional Information There are other implementations of TeX for Mac OS X: iMacTeX, CMacTeX, OzTeX, and Scientific Assistant. If you are thinking of installing TeX, you should visit their sites as well.
