html Council Member to File For Write-in Campaign Berkeley Vice Mayor and 20-year Councilmember Maudelle Shirek has taken out papers to file for a write-in campaign, after being disqualified for the official Nov. Jackie DeBose, a Shirek supporter, requested the papers on the District 3 council members behalf Sept. Shirek, 93, failed to qualify for the ballot after her aide, Michael Berkowitz, did not gather enough signatures for her to be eligible for candidacy. Her name will not appear on the official ballot, however. Max Anderson, Jeffrey Benefiel and Laura Menard all have qualified for the District 3 ballot. The gun ban drew support from more than two-thirds of Americans, according to polls. Signed into law by former President Clinton, the regulation bans the sale, manufacture and importation of 19 types of semiautomatic weapons with military features, along with ammunition clips of more than 10 rounds. But California state law regarding assault weapons is much stricter. In 1989, the state banned specific semiautomatic weapons; Both laws will remain in effect after the federal regulation is lifted. Still, local officials and residents fear the increased presence of assault weapons in the state due to the ease of cross-state smugglingassault weapons coming in from other states may weaken Californias law, they said. Its disgraceful that the Republicans did not renew this assault, said Berkeley City Councilmember Linda Maio. Strong lobbying by the National Rifle Association and weapons manufacturers has resulted in the law not being renewed, she said. The Berkeley Police Department tracked down and arrested the suspected driver on San Pablo Avenue and Derby Street in Berkeley, according to the wire service. One person was taken from the scene of the accident to the hospital, after having suffered minor injuries, according to the report. Three Women Suspected In Local Attack Berkeley police received a 911 call Tuesday evening from a female who reported she was attacked Sept. The victim reported that a group of females jumped her at Hearst Avenue and Sacramento Street around noon, causing her to fall to the ground, hit her head and pass out, said Berkeley police Officer Spencer Fomby. After regaining consciousness, the victim took BART to Daly City and checked herself into a hospital, Fomby said. The attackers are described as three black female juveniles. The freight truck was going to a military base when it was taken from a parking lot near Eastshore Highway and Page Street along Interstate 80 at 11:45 am after the driver left it unattended, police said.
