2005/6/27-28 [Computer/SW/OS/OsX] UID:38329 Activity:kinda low | 6/27 For anyone who's owned a G5 running OS X (10.3 or 10.4), how often do
you need to reboot if it's being used as a workstation?
\_ Occasionally you will run into the Windows NT syndrome of the system
needing a reboot for a system software patch - I'd say about once
every couple of months on a stable release, and once or twice a
month on a new one. Other than that, I have never seen a piece of

2005/3/24-25 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:36854 Activity:nil | 3/24 Can WinXP run different threads on different processors on a
multiprocessor machine? Or must they be different processes?
\_ There wouldn't be much point to multithreading otherwise, would
there? Yes, multithreaded apps run better on SMP systems.
\_ Can WinXP run different threads of a multi-threaded process on
multiple CPUs? Probably.

2004/9/2 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:33295 Activity:kinda low | 9/2 Hi, my old PC can dual-boot between DOS (don't laugh) and NT. It has
quite a few NT apps installed. Now if I install Win2k or XP onto the
PC, will I be able to dual-boot between DOS, NT, and 2k or XP? Does it
matter if I install it on the same or different hard disk? Also, will
I have to re-install all the NT apps in order to run them in 2k or XP?
Thanks.

lock the desktop quickly since I can't do WINKEY-L ?
\_ Winkey = Ctrl-Esc
\_ Not exactly. You can't chord with ctrl-esc.

2003/7/2-3 [Computer/SW/Editors/Emacs] UID:28902 Activity:moderate | 7/2 I just installed Emacs and XEmacs for Win2k. They both seem to kind of
suck. Neither seem to automatically fontify. Does Xemacs vs emacs
have a better reputation on NT (on UNIX I usually prefer emacs bc of
the faster load time)
also, anyone have a good NT .emacs file that I can steal?
\_ Hmm. I run emacs on win2k and have no problems getting emacs to

\_ cpu/memory? That's the basis of your OS decision? ME is a flaming
pile of goose dung. Use 2k. There was never a reason for ME to
ship except maybe MS's bottom line.

running Excel and checking her Outlook mail in a browser over a

2002/6/6-7 [Computer/Networking] UID:25013 Activity:nil | 6/6 On NT4.0 is there a way to tell it to refresh its DNS cache? My other
machine rebooted and obtained a new IP addr via DHCP, while the
original IP addr was assigned to someone else's machine which also uses
DHCP. Now my NT machine still thinks my other machine has the original
IP addr. Thanks.

2001/10/25 [Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:22824 Activity:high | 10/25 NT was supposed to be much more stable than Win3.x. Then Win2k was
supposed to be much more stable than NT. And now XP is supposed to
be much more stable than 2k. Sigh.
\_ Thing is, Win2k really is more stable than NT. Sure, it locks up
occassionally, but not the seemingly hourly BSODs in NT

2001/5/17 [Computer/SW/WWW/Browsers] UID:21295 Activity:high | 5/16 How is Netscape 6.01 compared to 4.76? Is it really more stable,
faster, and requires less RAM/disk space? I'm trying to see which
one to download, and I think such radical re-design as in 4.76->6.0
always means tons of bugs. Thx.

Is the first clause equiv to asking if most games now use DirectX?
\_ No, they're not equiv because NT won't run recent DirectX games.
\_ NT4.0 does up to directx3 which is all old stuff.
