www.theworld.org/globalhits/index.shtml BBC Music Online Original fans of the British punk rock band The Clash may not want to admit it. But they're fast approaching middle age, if they're not already there. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the British punk-rock band's most celebrated album. "London Calling" will be re-issued in two weeks in digitally remastered form. The other disc will include some tracks even the Clash's most avid fans have never heard before. The World's William Troop tells us about the "Vanilla Tapes." The "Vanilla Tapes" are a series of demo recordings made by The Clash in the spring of 1979, just before the final taping sessions for the album "London Calling." The tapes include never before released versions of Clash classics. In addition to London Calling, there are several other songs from the album. They're called the Vanilla Tapes, by the way, because they were recorded in the band's Vanilla Studio in London. It's now an office building used by the Church of England. And the demo tapes themselves were thought to have been lost forever too. The roadie left the tapes on the train and that was that. That's when the band's Mick Jones made an interesting discovery while he was packing up his house for a move. Jones: "I discovered these tapes as you do, you know like sifting through boxes. And I saw these tapes, and they were believed to be lost for, well they had been lost, for the past 25 years since we made the record and the last time we heard them. In addition to demo versions of London Calling songs, the newly found tapes also include out-takes that never made it onto any Clash record. The one you're about to hear is called "Lonesome Me" Clash bassist Paul Simonon and guitarist Mick Jones shared the recording and their impressions with the BBC recently in an exclusive interview. Simonon: "I liked it because it sounded like there was people at work... By hearing the Vanilla Tapes I could almost visualize the muddy brown carpet that was on the ceiling and walls to insulate the place. Jones: "By listening to this session I find it fascinating myself to see how you have works in progress. And on some of the tracks on the demos, I can hear all of the other parts that are not there." Simonon: "Because lyrics were changed, and variations really of songs. And also there's quite a few songs that didn't even make the album. " Among the songs on the demo tape that did make it into London Calling was "Train in Vain," which became one of the band's signature songs here in the States. Mick Jones says he and the band's late lead singer, Joe Strummer, used to keep all kinds of Clash notes and recordings in their homes. But Jones says he's not about to start searching for more lost tapes in his attic. Jones: "I'm going to make no attempt whatsoever to find... |
