Hospital officials said two dead were a Pakistani and a Saudi national. |
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3448779.stm Printable version Hundreds killed in Hajj stampede Pilgrims stoning pillar representing devil The stoning of the pillars is the most dangerous part of the Hajj A stampede at the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia has left at least 244 people dead, the largest number killed at the event since 1997. The Hajj minister, Iyad Madani, said a comparable number of pilgrims were injured during the 27-minute stampede. The disaster happened on Sunday as pilgrims flocked to the Jamarat Bridge in Mina, near Mecca, to hurl stones at pillars representing the devil. Up to two million people went to this year's event in and around Mecca. The Hajj - a key obligation for Muslim faithful - continued despite the disaster. Mr Madani said most of the victims were from inside Saudi Arabia and many had not been authorised to participate. An unnamed Saudi security official said most of the dead were Indonesians, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis, Reuters reported. Thirteen Egyptians were among the dead and four South Africans are reported missing, the news agency said. In an effort to control the numbers at the Hajj, Saudi Arabia sets quotas for pilgrims from each country and requires its citizens to register. "There was more than 400 metres of people pushing in the same direction (which) resulted in the collapse of those next to the stoning area... Mr Madani, quoted by Reuters news agency, said some pilgrims were "not organised" and their personal belongings had caused obstructions. The stoning ritual is usually the most dangerous part of the Hajj - last year 14 pilgrims were crushed to death during it, and 35 died in a 2001 stampede. During the ritual, pilgrims throw stones at the pillars - called Jamarat al Aqaba, Jamarat al Wusta and Jamarat al Ula - before beginning the religious feast of Eid al-Adha, when animals are sacrificed. Click here to see where the stampede took place As rescuers went to the scene, security officials attempted to control the crowds to prevent further crushing. Physically exhausted after three days of rites, pilgrims surged forward to cast their stones. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims crossed over and under the 15-metre (50-foot) bridge spanning a small valley between two cliffs at Mina. HAVE YOUR SAY My mom, brother, and brother-in-law are performing Hajj this year. Send us your comments Pilgrims converged on the main pillar from all directions, shouting "God is greatest!" Such was the size of the crowd that most pilgrims were unaware of what had happened, the BBC's Paul Simpson reports from Jeddah. "I assure you that all the preparations are always made, but we don't always know God's intentions. He said another 272 pilgrims had died of natural causes during the Hajj. All able-bodied Muslims are required to perform the Hajj at least once in their lifetime, if they can afford it. |
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1203108.stm They died during the Stoning of Satan ritual on Monday, near the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, state-run Saudi television reported. Hajj disasters 1998: At least 118 trampled to death 1997: 343 pilgrims die and 1,500 injured in fire 1994: 270 killed in a stampede as worshippers surged forwards during the Stoning the Devil. It is the latest in a series of disasters to strike the pilgrimage: In 1998, at least 118 people died and more than 180 were injured in a stampede during the third and last day of the stoning ceremony. Men dressed in seamless white robes and women covered from head to foot each cast seven pebbles at the columns. "Because of heavy congestion and jostling between pilgrims, many pilgrims, especially the elderly, tripped and fell, leading to the deaths of 35 pilgrims of different nationalities," a civil defence official said. Tens of thousands of pilgrims join the next leg of the Hajj The Saudi authorities put security measures in place after previous disasters "Some of them suffocated to death while others were trampled before security forces restored order." He said the tragedy occurred at around 0800 (0500 GMT) Since the last disaster, the Saudi authorities have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on safety precautions. They have constructed tens of thousands of fireproof tents and introduced ways of staggering the flow of pilgrims through certain congested areas. Forgiveness This year nearly two million pilgrims are performing the Hajj, somewhat fewer than last year. Performing the Hajj at least once in a lifetime is one of the five "pillars", or duties, of Islam. As part of measures to avoid a crush, elderly pilgrims had a head start Sunday night on the stoning ritual. Earlier on Sunday, some 18 million faithful had climbed Mount Arafat - the site of Muhammad's last sermon 14 centuries ago - to pray for forgiveness. Like Muslims around the world, the pilgrims also slaughter sheep, goats, camels and cattle for the start of the feast of Al-Adha to mark Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son for God. |
www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-3970622,00.html UP India Birthday Stampede for Saris Kills 21 Tuesday April 13, 2004 2:16 AM By BABU LAL SHARMA Associated Press Writer LUCKNOW, India (AP) - Thousands of people crowding into a park for a politician's birthday celebration and to receive free saris stampeded Monday, killing 21 women and children, officials said. The stampede came two weeks ahead of parliamentary elections in Lucknow, the capital of India's politically crucial Uttar Pradesh state and the constituency of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was headed to the city after the stampede. The confirmed death toll stood at 21, said Lucknow's senior police superintendent, Rajiv Ranjan Verma. Thousands of people, mostly women, had gathered under a huge white canopy to celebrate the birthday of Lalji Tandon, the state leader of Vajpayee's Bharatiya Janata Party - and to receive saris being given to poor women. But opposition parties sought to make it a political issue. The main opposition Congress party said the distribution of saris amounted to luring voters and a violation of the code of conduct set by the Election Commission. The party demanded the Election Commission investigate the incident. Chief Election Commissioner TS Krishnamurthy told reporters in New Delhi that his officials were collecting information about the incident. Tandon said the function was organized by a group of his supporters, and that neither he, or his party, was directly involved. Indian politicians commonly give away food, liquor, blankets and other gifts at election time to attract crowds and win votes. He celebrated his birthday and gave us death,'' Ketaki Devi, who ran out of the park to save herself, told reporters. Lalit Saxena, one of the doctors who took the bodies to three city hospitals. The stampede began when rumors spread through the crowd that there were no more saris to be given away. We tried to stop the distribution but before we could, everything went haywire and old women were trampled to death,'' said Brijendra Yadav, one of the organizers. After the chaos, hundreds of sandals were strewn across the park and chairs were overturned. Thousands of saris still waiting to be given away lay near the stage in bundles. There were mostly old ladies from poor families who had come to get saris,'' said Renuka Sharma, who was in a bookstore across the road when the stampede began. In the hours after the stampede, dozens of bodies were stacked atop each either on the floor of a small ambulance. There were no stretchers, and no hospital workers accompanied the bodies. Indian television showed relatives of the dead wailing as they stepped into the ambulance one by one, turning over the faces and the lifeless limbs to find their kin. A woman in a red sari shrieked hysterically as she looked around, scrambled among the dead, and found the body of her daughter. It is the responsibility of the organizers to inform the police,'' said Verma, the police superintendent. |

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/765456.stm Friday, 26 May, 2000, 17:25 GMT 18:25 UK Circus stampede kills eight Lahore fort The stampede took place in Lahore's old quarter By Shahid Malik in Lahore Eight people have been killed and at least three wounded after a stampede at a circus in the Pakistani city of Lahore. A police official told the BBC that the stampede was triggered off when guards at the circus used batons to break up an unruly crowd. The incident took place just as a special show was about to start - in the Minar-e-Pakistan grounds adjacent to the historical Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. But an eyewitness said he had also seen policemen using batons to beat the crowd. Special show The tragedy took place outside the premises of a long-running travelling circus company that had been around for the past 30 years. The company had been putting on four daily shows in the Minar-e-Pakistan grounds since last Tuesday. The stampede was caused when spectators crowded the premises to ensure their entry for a special show in the early hours of Friday. Most of them were pilgrims who had been attending an annual congregation less than a kilometre away at the grave of Data Gunj Bukhsh, popularly dubbed the patron saint of Lahore. A shopkeeper at a food stall said that some people who had tried to force their entry without tickets were beaten up by the private guards employed by the circus management. Police A police official endorsed his version and confirmed that eight people had been killed and another three wounded. But another eye witness said he had seen the police using batons to stop the crowd's entry. Speaking to the BBC, the owner of the circus, Mian Farzand Ali, deeply regretted the loss of life which, he said, had been caused by over-crowding. The tragedy occurred during the interval between the two shows, he said, because spectators tried to force their entry while people were still coming out of the circus tent. Meanwhile, the circus was still attracting large crowds after the tragedy. |
