The song, a collaborative work of Giancarlo Bigazzi (who also co-wrote "Gloria"), Raffael Riefoli, and Steve Piccolo, is written from the point of view of a person who willingly surrenders her inhibitions and control to her lover; Long a favorite of 80's radio and practically every club in the world, "Self Control", with its strong hook and haunting melody, garnered both intense respect, as well as a slight amount of criticism. The video for the song, directed by William Friedkin with a good amount of inspiration by Laura (see below), caught the attention of the censors at then fledgling MTV Music video had just caught on a few years earlier, and the video's scenes of suggestive orgy activity were considered too controversial for the relatively conservative audience of the time.
