8/24 Is there any physical difference between USB 1.1 and 2.0? Google is
        being unhelpful.
\_ The sockets are the same, but the cable needs to support 2.0 speeds.
"USB 1.1 certified" cables will work with 2.0 since that's how it's
spec'd, but not all cables are even 1.1 certified.
           http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Q_21083579.html
USB hubs and devices are either 1.1 only, or 2.0 and backwards
           compatible to 1.1.
\_ What, may I ask, makes the difference between 1.1 and 2? What
is the cause of the faster speed?
\_ From what I read, it's an increase in raw signalling rate,
with a drop in current to reduce noise, and of course
something else to indicate the speed. google usb nutshell.
\_ How would a drop in current reduce noise?
\_ You're reading it the wrong way. It reduces noise
                       for non-USB components.
                       \_ What!?? Please elaborate.

5/22 Are LED monitors much better than LCD monitors?
\_ OLED is still too new to know. They're direct emitters, so don't
have a backlight, and can turn completely off, hence better black.
The early news was that blue pixels burn out relatively quickly.

Wakeup Date: 08/05/2004 09:16AM PDT Comment USB 11 cables were way over engineered, so there is absolutely NO real difference. There are a couple of reasons why USB 20 signalling speeds are below 500 MHz: cost of validation & forewards compatibility of forward USB 11 cables. Albert_Greenspoon Date: 08/05/2004 09:33AM PDT Author Comment So, as I suspected the entire difference lies in the circuitry of the device involved and the PC circuitry to which it's connected.. USB 20 architecture uses the same cables and connectors as USB 11 compliant products. Unforunately, only 3 out of 11 cables on the market are certified as USB 11 compliant. You may run into the cables that cause problems connecting high-speed peripherals. To avoid negative user experience, most vendors include USB 20 compliant cables with their USB 2 PCI cards and peripherals And there's no difference in physical between usb 11 cable or usb 20 cable. mspx "And high-quality USB 20-compatible cables have been around for months. USB 20 shouldn't require you to buy new USB cables, unless you have really cheap cables that don't work well with USB 11, either. Certified USB 20 cables are available, but they're usually just high-quality USB 11 cables." And it's looks like every1 selling usb 20 cables only, well we can't know if it's right or not ... DoTheDEW335 Date: 08/05/2004 01:01PM PDT Comment Only thing I would like to add: Some devices have a connector other than USB that goto the device then it goes to a USB connection to goto the CPU. I know this sounds dumb and obvious , just thought I'd add it. I have a external 40GB HD that only came with a 11 connection and I needed to purchase a seperate cable for USB2 to work. So be carefull if your connecting a device that has some type of converter on one end. RobWaite Date: 08/05/2004 03:05PM PDT Comment One more point..... One the front of some cases you may have those extra USB ports. If the connection from the motherboard to these ports does not have some curcuit board inbetween then they are will be USB11 spec. There is really no difference to these cables and the USB20 cables, the only thing is that the manufactuers usually get a little jittery and say that they are USB11 not USB20 to save themselve lots of trouble. UNISH25 Date: 08/05/2004 06:30PM PDT Comment There is no real difference between USB 11 cables and USB 20 cables. But for downloading wise, If you have a USB cable, then technically it can work for USB 11 and USB 20 For instance, say your digital music player came with a USB 11 cable. And you have a Digital camera with the same connector that came with a USB 20 cable. You can basically swap these cables and they should theoretically work. combthins Date: 08/09/2004 05:36AM PDT Comment USB 11 and 20 cables should be the same. Such devices can use a lower quality cable, but the cable must be captive (like a keyboard or a mouse) to prevent it being used for higher speed devices. Wakeup Date: 08/09/2004 09:09AM PDT Comment Pretty much everyone is saying the same thing I am saying. And their is nothing that I can find really on google that seems to say anything different. However from time to time we see a bad one with higher retransmission rates. This is not related to the fact that they were USB1 or USB2 however. When selecting a cable pick a short one with good shielding and solid connectors. Also, don't use extender cables to increase the length if you can avoid it.
