7/26 This is a followup to http://csua.org/u/8bm thanks to everyone who replied. Anyways, we had a really good time in Marin Headlands. It was surprisingly not crowded at all like some other places and the weather was perfect (not too hot & the humidity perfect). In addition it was really close to Sausalito where we hung out. I'd say the best part was going up to Battery 129 overlooking Golden Gate Bridge and the city, where it looked like it was sitting on the cloud. The scenery was breathtaking and unforgettable. The next best thing was going into the old artillery/battery/bunker/defensive buildings. They looked *exactly* like the ones I saw in Battlefield 1942/Medal of Honor, except without the guns. I never realized how massize those naval artillery guns were and how heavy the shells were (2100 pounds each!!!) until I went into one of those places. It was an awsome experience. Again thanks motd hikers! \_ Is this the battery the one where to reach it, you go under the freeway and up the hill after crossing GGB? |

csua.org/u/8bm -> csua.com/?entry=32454 I'm thinking of either Chabot Lake (close to Berkeley, and it's a lake) or the Big Basin. ok thx \_ For serious hills and a beautiful hike , Mt Tam down to Stinson or vice versa. There's flat parts and hills, beaches, scrubland and forests. There's ususally a strong wind so it's never too hot, and there are some awesome views. Also, it's kind of neat to have a picnic lunch in a WW2 anti-aircraft gun emplacement. If you do the hike around the lake, it's about 83 miles, probably about 075 mile of it decent uphill. not sure how pleasant it would be on a hot, cloudless day. ymte valley is a world class sight and i think it is worth the extra say 2hrs each way ... There are some magnificent trails and a couple of very nice waterfalls (no swimming, though). It takes a while to get there, though, and the road (236) is winding. If you're in Berkeley/Oakland, Chabot Regional park is no more than 15 minutes away, and there are over 27 miles of trails out there (it goes all the way down to Castro Valley). |
