2006/4/28-29 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:42859 Activity:nil | 4/27 My 2 month old Seagate 200G EIDE drive failed yesterday. It's a
Seagate, not a WD or Maxtor. I can't believe it.
\_ Statistically, sooner or later you will get unlucky. Also, every
now and then vendors have bad runs, like the IBM Deathstar drives
from a couple years ago. If it's 2 months old it should still be
under warranty. Just get it replaced. -dans

2003/10/28 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:10816 Activity:nil | 10/27 If I'm getting a new EIDE hard disk for my 4 year old computer, do I
have to worry about hardware incompatibilities? My old computer
has an EIDE drive in it, but I'm not sure what the deal is with
terms like Ultra ATA/133 and so on. Thanks.
\_ No. It'll work as expected. You may not get the super peak
performace the drive is capable of but you won't notice since

2003/6/1-2 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:28601 Activity:very high | 6/1 I want to put together a reasonably large (~250GB), reliable, and
cheap disk array for important files and documents on a FreeBSD box
which currently only has a couple of IDE drives in it. I'm thinking of
running vinum on a bunch of external drives--any recommendations on
dependable, not-too-expensive disk racks/cases? Speed's no issue,
so what about scsi-2 vs. USB vs. Firewire? Any opinions welcome. -John

disk work or do I have to buy Sun disk, like I had to buy Sun CD-ROM

\_ You didn't have to buy a Sun CD-ROM, you just had to do more
research.

1999/1/24 [Computer/HW/Drives] UID:15286 Activity:moderate | 1/23 What's a good brand of IDE hard disk to buy?
\_ It's all the same although some people will feed you their religion
about certain brands. Get the size you need of the type you need
(ide/eide/ata-33/ata-66,etc) and balance performance vs. cost.
If there was truly a bad brand, they'd be gone years ago.

SCSI drives (one for kernel/binary/swap, the other one for user only)
versus two EIDE-4 drives? There is a pretty sizable price gap. THANKS.

1. what is a good CD-R to get. Price [as long as we are still in
the commercial electronics and not $10000 range] is not important,
I would like it to write fast [4x is best consumer speed?], not
break [so willing to pay for name brand using good components],
easy to use [good software ... unix and windows?], and i suppose
