3/2 How is an Opteron different from an Athlon64?
\_ Most Opterons require registered DIMM (940pin) and most
have 3 HT links. 1xx series only have 1 usable one, though.
There're some 939pin Opterons, which are basically identical
to Athlon 64. All Athlon 64s have 1 HT link only and use

6/23 Help! I am trying to convince my collegues that Solairs 10 is not
even close to be used as a desktop OS. They've kept telling me that
since it uses Gnome UI, it has the same usability as Linux. How
do I counter that? So far, I can say:
        1. Linux has a lot more working device drivers

1 core @ 100% as 25% CPU usage. I realize this is a fuzzy question,
but what's a reasonable real-world limit for CPU usage in this

2/17 I need to buy a computer for photo-processing. Currently, on a 3 GHz
P4, it takes Photoshop ~1min. to open up a 5-6MB raw file, and even
longer to do any processing. Are any PC-clones comparable to Apple's
Power Mac's in terms of photo-processing power? A Dual PowerMac1.8
        w/1GB RAM, and 20" screen is $3300. Top-of-line PC's are much cheaper.

if someone can gain root access and flash the system with

7/31 I just bought AMD2500+ (based on 1800Mhz) with FSB of 333Mhz and
installed it on a MB that supports up to AMD3200. When I boot up the

12/9 Another idea for the CSUA that lets you spend money and maybe get some
cool toys. Instead of buying a beefy server (like say, a massive server
with 20 386DX processors), buy a few cheap machines (like the ones
mentioned below) that have good disks and work on failover / load
balancing. A netscaler or other piece of hardware is complete overkill,
but maybe hacking an OpenBSD box could do the trick. The idea is that

Contributed by grey on Fri Jun 25 16:01:28 2004 (GMT) from the keep the c2k4 stories coming dept. Thanks to Jolan Luff for pointing out this noteworthy c2k4 improvement: SMP support for amd64! here is a posting to misc@ with the announcement as well. Choice quote from art@: "Kernel compile time on a quad machine with whatever lousy drives AMD puts in them (make -j7 PIPE=-pipe) is around 80 seconds. We could get really used to those machines, too bad it's only a loaner." Looks like now might be a good time to start looking at new hardware. If memory serves, there's only one major vendor not shipping opteron servers so you may be able to find some good deals if you don't want to build yourself as well. And of course, from personal experience, I can say that developers have liked fast hardware donations in the past if any readers feel so inclined.
