6/24 Hotmail to increase storage. Should I buy storage stocks?
        http://tinyurl.com/2suo3
\_ No. You should sell storage stocks. The amount of storage a place
like hotmail or yahoo or google needs is only a few tens of
millions at most and the cost of storage per terabyte continues to
plunge rapidly. The storage industry has razor thin margins which
is why the dozens of companies you could buy a drive from in the 80s
is now Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, and (if you're stupid)
           Fujitsu.
           \_ IBM's gone?
\- ibm sold much of it's disk drive stuff to hitachi --psb
\_ Sold to Hitachi. They handled they 60 and 70 gig failing HD
\_ Sold to Hitachi. They handled the 60 and 70 gig failing HD
problem very poorly. I wouldn't trust them or Hitachi who
bought it because it's mostly the same people.
\_ Hitachi seems to have cleaned up the division.
The new 120-180 gb drives are reliable and
come with good warranties (3 yrs for some).
\_ There is also Samsung. I have one, it's quiet and seems fast,
no idea about reliability but I haven't heard horror stories.
\_ same here. i bought it mainly for its quietness, but thus
far no issues after 6-8 months, which is more than i could
say for some drives i've owned *cough*quantum*cough*
\_ Don't buy a maxtor. The 120 and 160s have lots of problems.

8/4 I went to Fry's for the first time in ages and was surprised to
see a 1T Seagate HD on sale. I'm still using my 250G and it's
only 60% full. What the heck do people put on their HD these
days, porn? I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy a
        1T drive for personal use.

5/17 My new 750G Seagate HD shows only 698G available. WHAT THE FUCK??
\_ 750G = 750*10^9 bytes. Your OS is probably measuring in 2^30 bytes.
           See GiB vs GB
\_ Also, disk drive manufacturers advertise "raw" storage, while
your O/S measures usable storage. You lose quite a bit to
disk label information, metadata and other various things.

8/8 I want to replace the 30GB HD in a 1Ghz iBook. Will any notebook HD
do? Any recommendations? Price/Reliability more important than perf.
I'm looking at a Hitachi Travelstar or Seagate Momentus from newegg.
\_ I've used Travelstar's before in a PB, they are fine.
\_ I went through 2 Travelstars before installing a Seagate.

11/15 [unrelated to politics] My debian machine at home (I'm learning and
tinkering) seems to spin the HD down occasionally. I'd like to never
spin down the HD (or at least control which hours it can). Any
        pointers to doing this?

5/11 If you noticed that your laptop HD never rests because it's doing
something, and you've already killed all auxilary processes and made
drives not "Fast Indexable", it's the explorer that's funky. Here
is one solution. Kill explorer and then run it again. You can use
        a batch file script:

5/11 I'd like to be able to use my mp3 player as a rescue os disk as well.
It shows up as USB HD on most OS. The mp3 player itself works fine
as long as I store all of the music on the first vfat partition. I'd
like to be able to either install linux onto the HD or store various
ISO images on the HD and have it boot from it, with menu, so I can
can select different images. Anyone know of such method?

5/8 Poll. If you even had to return a HD, what was your experience like?
\_ Hitachi: Regular RMA, No advanced RMA, test suite sucks
\_ WD: Had 2 consecutive failures (same model) in 6 months, the RMA
website is really good, has tracking and advanced RMA. Advanced RMA
requires you putting in credit card number so that if you don't
return the defective drive in 30 days they'll charge you. It's not

5/5 I have a Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 80G HD that occasionally makes loud
clicking noise unrelated to head seek. Today while moving a 150M file
I started hearing that clicking noise again, and 1 min later my
computer freezes. I rebooted, tried copying other files and it's fine
and went back to the same file, and it freezes again. Help?

5/2 To silent PC builders, make sure your HD is cool! You can download

Microsoft also said that it will roll out free e-mail and anti-virus protection to all the 170 million MSN Hotmail customers worldwide that will both scan and clean incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses and worms before they can enter a customer's inbox. The changes will start early in July, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said. Yahoo earlier this month made good on a promise to boost the storage it provides to users of its e-mail service, raising the stakes in the e-mail war with Web search rival Google Inc. Google has announced plans for its Gmail service that gives users 1 gigabyte of free storage, far more than offered by Yahoo or Microsoft's e-mail services. "The playing field has changed," said Blake Irving, vice president of communication services and member platform for MSN "We're going to take storage off the table as an issue." Microsoft will now boost storage to 250 megabytes for users of its free MSN Hotmail and also increased the size of attachments that can be sent with e-mails, to 10 megabytes from 1 megabyte previously. Users of the free MSN Hotmail before had 2 megabytes of storage capacity. All current Hotmail extra storage subscribers worldwide will be upgraded to MSN Hotmail Plus when it launches globally later this summer, Microsoft said. MSN Premium subscribers will also receive those added storage benefits later this year. Customers of Hotmail Plus also will not see graphical advertisements -- they will be replaced by text advertisements -- and their accounts will never expire, Irving said. Users of the free Hotmail e-mail service must log in at least once every 30 days or their accounts expire.
