6/15 Firefox 0.9 is out:
        http://mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/#download
\_ What's the revision history of the project name?
           \_ Phoenix, Firebird, Firefox.
\_ I've read a lot of bitching about the theme, but there really are
some problems with this release. The new extension website isn't
even rendering correctly; I can't get flash or shockwave installed,
and a couple extensions I have installed (UserAgentSwitcher and
BugMeNot) are giving me XUL problems.
BugMeNot) are giving me XUL problems. Also, I can't install ANY
           other themes.
Update: I was able to install a theme by downloading the theme to
my desktop and then dragging it onto the theme manager.
I also got flash installed after deleting my profile
& install directory and then reinstalling.
\_ thanks. I'll wait for next release :p
\_ Bitching from people using a pre-1.0 release. The notes made
it really fucking clear that this is a) beta software, b) that
they had changed the system so that a lot of pre 0.9 extensions
and themes won't work until re-written, and c) this is pre-1.0
beta software. Instead of bitching and telling people not to
use it how about you do something useful like submitting a few
nicely worded bug reports? When you walk on the bleeding edge
you'll get burned. If you don't like that, then Microsoft has
an industry standard browser available for free download.
\_ Please simmer- I've been using this since 0.4 and I'm no
stranger to odd upgrade issues. What I meant was merely that
this upgrade has frustrated me more than I expected-- .7 & .8
were *perfect* upgrades, this one has not been. I understand
that this version contains some major updates to the
extension and theme formats, and I wiped my install and
profile directories to accomodate. Just a heads-up.
\_ I think the poster above is reasonable and kind to point out
that .9 may be less stable/usable than .8. I consider this
a public service announcement, not flame-bait.
\_ Everyone using .8 *should* up to .9 and file bug reports.
If you're not then why are you using beta software?
\_ Because I don't have a day to spare right now to hack
on my web browser if it hoses my system in some way...

\_ After reading this post, I decided to be foolish and upgrade as well
\_ I downgraded to 0.9rc1 due to all the problems with 0.9. I think
that you might still be able to grab rc1 from the servers. If anyone
needs it I can probably stick a copy of the macosx dmg in /tmp
           (temporarily).

2/5 I like Adobe Flash. When written correctly, it scales along
with your browser size. It looks consistent on every single
browser. It is predictable. On the other hand, I'm not a big
fan of CSS/HTML, which for the most part, look wildly different
between browsers, and don't even work consistently or
correctly at times. So why do so many people (like Steve Jobs)

About Us search mozilla: go Mozilla Firefox 09 Release Notes - Firefox 09 (One Tree Hill) Firefox is a speedy, full-featured browser that makes browsing more efficient than ever before. While this software works well enough to be relied upon as your primary browser in most cases, we make no guarantees of its performance or stability. It is a pre-release product and should not be relied upon for mission-critical tasks. What's New Here are the news in this release of Firefox: * New Default Theme An updated Default Theme now presents a uniform appearance across all three platforms - a new crisp, clear look for Windows users. Firefox can also import from Mozilla 1x, Netscape 4x, 6x and 7x and Opera. MacOS X and Linux migrators for browsers like Safari, OmniWeb, Konqueror etc will arrive in future releases. For Linux/GTK2 Users * Installer Firefox now comes with an installer for Linux/GTK2 users. The new installer makes the installation process much simpler. NOTE - Do not install Firefox over the top of another Firefox installation. If you want to install Firefox 09 into the same folder that you had Firefox 08 in, uninstall Firefox 08 first. MacOS X Double click the Firefox Compressed Disk Image to mount. Your browser may have already uncompressed the image and mounted it for you. Double click the Firefox 09 Disk Image and drag the Firefox application onto your hard disk. Drag the icon to your Dock if you want it to appear there. When the Control Panel appears, double click Add or Remove Programs. These instructions leave your profile in place in case you install Firefox again in the future. profile folder, follow these instructions: Windows Locate your Application Data folder, this is usually under Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data. You may need to make hidden files visible in Windows Explorer, since the Application Data folder is hidden. If your username is "Joe", and your Documents and Settings folder is on C:\, your profile folder is here: C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Application Data\Firefox. MacOS X Open the Library folder in your Home folder, and remove the Firefox folder. mozilla/firefox/ If you were using Firefox 08 as your default browser prior to upgrading to Firefox 09, data from your profile will be copied into the new location. You can remove the old "Phoenix" folder at your leisure. When you run 09 for the first time, information about your profiles will be copied to the new location but the data will not be moved. ini to update the registry to point to the new location. Users of Firefox 08 should not have to worry about this, this is only for community testers and people who have been living on the bleeding edge. Old Extensions and Themes To prevent the kind of problems we had with the 08 release (users were having the browser not start with "No XBL Binding for Browser" errors, and finding that their theme was broken), when you run 09 for the first time all of your extensions will be automatically disabled, and the theme will be reset to the default. You must then look for newer versions of your extensions that are compatible with Firefox 09 since the extension API has changed. Known Issues This list covers some of the known problems with Firefox 09 Please read this before reporting any new bugs, and watch it regularly (we'll update it as new bugs are found in the release). There may be issues still where if a restricted-access user is the first to run the app, these files may not be generated properly and Firefox may enter an infinite restart loop. Any toolbar customizations you have made or window placement will be lost * We have made some changes to fix security problems involving one site targeting links and form submissions into a frameset created by another site, however these changes may cause problems with some sites. Please file bugs on the URLs that are problematic, if you encounter any. Many of the problems you may experience in Firefox are actually problems in this Mozilla core code. If you find a problem with page content or connectivity then it is probably a Mozilla problem and should be reported to the Browser product in Bugzilla, not to the Firefox product. Also, some themes will not completely switch without a restart. Troubleshooting It should not be necessary to create a new profile when you upgrade from a previous version of Firefox providing you do disable all extensions from the prior version before upgrading. To do this, open the old version and open Tools > Options and click the Extensions panel. Click on each of the extensions listed and choose Disable Extension. Once you have installed Firefox, check to see if there are new versions of all of your extensions that are compatible with the new version, and install them. If you enable an extension from an older version of Firebird or Phoenix and it causes problems, run the older version of the browser and disable the extension, then run the newer version again. If you encounter strange problems relating to bookmarks, downloads, window placement, toolbars, history, or other settings, it is recommended that you try creating a new profile and attempting to reproduce the problem before filing bugs. Migrate your settings files (Bookmarks, Saved Passwords, etc) over one by one, checking each time to see if the problems resurface. If you do find a particular profile data file is causing a problem, file a bug and attach the file. Make it your mission to convert as many of your friends, family members and coworkers as possible. If you're a student, get it distributed at your college. Currently Ben Goodger (working for the Mozilla Foundation), Brian Ryner (for IBM), Pierre Chanial, Blake Ross, Dave Hyatt, Benjamin Smedberg, Darin Fisher and the wider community contributing to the Mozilla codebase. Asa Dotzler, Leaf Nunes and a team of QA contacts handle bug triage, releases, and other odds and ends. Firefox is substantially different, featuring a number of exclusive features and countless refinements. Well over 120,000 lines of code have been added or changed in the browser and toolkit CVS directories since the project began. Many of the current users of the full Mozilla Application Suite are also using it for mail and news. This isn't possible in Firefox since it's a browser only, however it does work with your default mail client.
