6/14 I'm looking to purchase a firewire enclosuer online. NewEgg is
                                           \_ enclosure, or something French?
out of stock for the one I want (Coolmax CD-309-FW). Any
other recommendations for online hardware stores?
        \_ enclosure, or something French?
\_ Wasn't FW invented by the French? Maybe he wants the real thing?

\_ 3.5" hard drive, this one is USB 2.0 and FireWire. I got one last
week and it works fine with my Hitachi 160 GB. Read the user
reviews. 90% tooless, convenient to swap HDs if you want,
reviews. 90% tool-less, convenient to swap HDs if you want,
light-weight, no fan, and space efficient is nice. The one with
the neon lights blocks the air vents. For me the main issue is
that it uses a power brick. http://csua.org/u/702
\_ I am very happy with mine, and I coughed up the extra $3 for the
neon lights. Its great for mood lighting my room.
Its true about the air vents tho it hasn't gotten THAT hot.
I have a 250gb drive in mine, and I like it way better than
my other enclosure with a fan because that one gets pretty loud.
I don't think you can get around having a power brick.
\_ no power brick: See the pic for the coolmax.

7/22 Playing with dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/<disk> on linux and bsd:
2 questions, on linux when <disk>==hda it always gives me this off

7/28 Does it make sense to defragment disks on VMWare? My 80GB disk
on VMWare isn't really using 80GB, it just uses what it needs.
Will defragment do anything to it?
\_ If you want to speed up disk operation in your VM, it's best to
defragment the disks in your VM, then defragment the disk on your
host machine where the VM files are.

Specifications: Application: 35 IDE hard drive Material: Aluminum IDE Interface: Support ATA PIO modes0-4, Ultra DMA 2 & 4 Interface: USB 20/ IEEE1394 Power: AC Adapter Features: Portable size, light and durable shell, Provide excellent heat dissipation Customer Reviews 7 . See complete review I considered many models, but went with this one. Here is my experience: - Packed very well, but the clear window on teh box rubbed the text and marred the finish in some places of the unit. The enclosure gets quite warm when the disk is running, but thats ok, it is supposed to do that. The aluminum panels act as large heatsinks to move the heat away from the drive. If you are not an advanced user you could have trouble setting this up correctly. Also, speeze does not offer support for this product it is not even on their product list. It requires a fair bit of force to plug in the AC power, and the connector bends under the pressure. Overall this is a decent enclosure, I wouldnt necessarily recommend it though unless you are sure of what you are doing. See complete review I bought the Firewire and USB enclosure about a month ago and really like the looks of it. The plug from the wall into the transformer does not stay in well and causes power loss if you move the unit or if you bump the transformer. It also has had intermittent connections that caused the drive to flicker on and off. See complete review Both interfaces work good, but I had some trouble with a couple of drives not starting up. Im only guessing, but I think there was insufficient power to start the drive. Im giving 4 stars, since the unit function great with working drive.
