Stoke City fan Alan John Walker, whose three-year football banning order expired in November, was arrested by Portuguese police on Saturday for assault. He is believed to be the first person to be deported from Portugal for trouble at Euro 2004. The 29-year-old, who lives at The Pride of the Moorlands pub, in Junction Road, Leek, appeared before a Lisbon court yesterday and was given a 12-month jail term suspended for three years and fined 2,000 euros. He was also banned from entering Portugal for 12 months and was ordered to be deported. It is not yet known whether Walker has arrived back in England. In November 2000, life-long Potters' supporter Walker was banned from attending matches for three years after being caught up in a pitch invasion at Wigan's JJB Stadium. The order ran out eight months ago, meaning Walker was free to travel to the tournament. A mammoth police operation has seen undercover hooligan spotters from Stoke-on-Trent police stationed at airports on the lookout for those trying to defy their banning orders. Currently about 170 Potteries people are banned from the tournament and have been ordered to surrender their passports. But despite an additional police pledge to crackdown on known hooligans who are not currently banned, Walker slipped through the net. Details about the attack have not yet been made available. Football intelligence officers in Stoke-on-Trent are planning to review CCTV footage surrounding the incident to decide whether a fresh banning order can be sought for Walker. A police spokesman said: "Alan John Walker was arrested on Saturday for assault against a Frenchman and was out before the court in Lisbon on Sunday. He received a 12-month sentence suspended for three years and was fined 2,000 euros. "He is being deported and cannot re-enter Portugal for 12 months. We will be looking at video tapes from Portugal to see whether there is any further action that can be taken here such as a civil banning order." Staffordshire Police's Superintendent Andy Franks, who is part of a national anti-violence police strategy in Portugal spearheaded by the force's Assistant Chief Constable David Swift said: "This can act as a warning to anyone involved in violence here in Portugal, that they will be dealt with firmly and appropriately and put before the courts." A spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers added: "If someone has not got a banning order we can't prevent them from travelling. "Even if someone has caused trouble in the past we still have to have reason to suspect that they are intending to cause trouble, that's when we can do something about it." |
