To celebrate the Games' history and heritage, the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Torch Relay will unite all Olympic cities across the five land masses represented by the Olympic rings. People from around the world will have the opportunity to participate, experience and celebrate the power of the Olympic flame. The Olympic flame was rekindled 25 March during a traditional ceremony at the Temple of Hera in ancient Olympia, Greece. The flame now embarks on an historic journey throughout the world and Greece on its path to the Athens Olympic Stadium on 13 August to commence the great celebration of the 2004 Olympic Games. The ATHENS 2004 Torch Relay is presented by Cola-Cola and Samsung. The international journey of the Olympic flame spans 35 days, covering a distance of more than 78,000 kilometres. More than 3,600 torchbearers will pass the Olympic flame torch-to-torch in cities across the globe. More than 260 million people will have the opportunity to see the flame in close proximity to their city. The flame will visit every city that has played host to the Summer Olympic Games, bringing the light and joy of the Olympic celebration. It will also pass through cities with special symbolic meaning, including Brussels, heart of the European Union, Lausanne, home of the International Olympic Committee, and Beijing, host city for 2008. The Olympic Torch Relay will touch African and South American soil for the first time with visits to Cairo and Cape Town, and Rio de Janeiro, respectively. The ATHENS 2004 Olympic Torch Relay embraces all cultures and continents; It will spread the Olympic values of participation, unity and peace. And it will reaffirm that the Games are performed by people for people, a crowning moment for the human spirit, touching the heart and minds of everyone.
