In the old days when you talked about the rich people educated at elite schools who thought they derserved everything, and who ran the country and could give a fuck about the little people -- everyone knew you were talking about CEO's, inherited wealth, etc. Now the little guy has been trained to hate "liberals" even though it's the repub donors with silver spoons in their mouth who are running things. The "heartland" people hate the "volvo driving" or "latte drinking" liberals because they are class conscious, but they don't correlate their own communities being hollowed out with the corporations that are doing it. Every cycle they are told to vote for people who will get rid of abortionists, stop the trash from being on TV, get prayer back in schools, stop the teaching of evolution. Year after year they send these people to Washington, and year after year they see NO results from these people. This is not an accident, the hot-topic issues are deliberately picked to get people mad, but to be unresolvable. Every year they faithfully do this, and as their plight worsens they never make the connection. They vote 90% republican and each year DEMAND that the GOVERNMENT be taken out of their lives and that the giant agribusiness concerns in Kansas be allowed to control 60-70% of the market for what's grown there. They are getting their wish, and getting poorer as a result. Though food prices rise, the prices they fetch drop by 25%, as they are locked into long term contracts with the one major grain buyer. The rich conservatives have taken the populist language of the left, but removed the economic parts. Now they get the same populist people to *hate* the "elites" on the coasts, but in reality they''ve conned them into supporting the very wealthy they think they are "sending a message" to.
