11/12 Server nerds, CCC for mac is totally awesome. is there somethng
as cool and friendly for PC or unix?
\_ Hi. "CCC" is a free mac program known as "Carbon Copy Cloner".
If you use a Mac, and have some sort of external usb or firewire
drive, I recommend you spend 15 minutes downloading it and
setting it up. You can easily make a backup set up your data,

8/25 I have a portable USB HD (2.5") that I built myself with WD HD
and an enclosure. On some systems it won't power on via the
USB cable, it'll try to spin up, but does not successfully
spin up. Could it be those machines do not provide enough
power via the usb output? On one machine that fails to power
up, I tried the fire-wire cable, it powered up fine. It also

drive in a firewire external enclosure? If so, which enclosure would
you recommend? I would like to be able to remoteley monitor an
        external hard drive.
\_ I don't think so, but I believe you can do so with a Serial ATA

Is there a way to do this with a PC? Maybe there
is a cd I can boot the PC with to do this?
\_ You don't need a system install cd to do this. You just hold down

1/15 I've got a mac G4 laptop and a dell box that I want to play kernel
hacker with, but I don't want to keep a bulky monitor around. Is
it possible to get a terminal connection from the dell box to the
laptop? The dell has USB, serial, PS/2, and VGA (no firewire).
        Any suggestions appreciate, thanks.

to connect a PC laptop and a MAC laptop at home. About 500 gigs
to 1 T. I'm looking at the Maxtor Shared storage series and also at
the "Buffalo terastation". Can somebody recommend other brand names?
This is for home use, performance is not critical but it has to be
reasonably priced. General purpose PC is out of the question because

I would like to put 3 or more regular IDE HDs in an external enclosure, that they share the same cable for speed is not an issue since I don't intend to access them all concurrently all the time. You definately want an Oxford chip as they have the highest compatibility. TG 112 FredCPA1 Ars Centurion Tribus: Atlanta, GA Registered: November 23, 2001 113 Posts: 1572 114 Mood of the topic. Trust me - I've tried to get the 911 chipset to work with a 250GB drive. Sometimes it would look like it recognized the whole drive, other times, only 128GB. Once I upgraded to a 922 enclosure, it was smooth sailing. Yeah, that's seems to be a good idea if you're OK with the drive size restriction. Yeah, that's seems to be a good idea if you're OK with the drive size restriction. However, I may be able to use *one* of them for my smallest drives (80 and 120), assuming I keep them around long enough.
