New York Times executive editor Bill Keller is said to be begging movie critic Elvis Mitchell to change his mind about quitting the Gray Lady. According to sources inside the paper, Keller has been "calling Elvis constantly since he left trying to get him to reconsider. Strauss, a longtime music critic for the paper, left last month to focus on writing books. Times bigwigs were said to be upset that Strauss had agreed to author porn star Jenna Jameson's autobiography. Strauss also appeared in a porno film last year, albeit fully clothed, in a minor "scenery" role. In the issue of New York magazine out tomorrow, Carl Swanson notes that Mitchell "makes the rounds of TV shows, film festivals, and lecture appointments, hobnobbing with stars and industry figures," and has a part-time job teaching classes at Harvard. But again, insiders at the Times point out: "If his being friends with Harvey Weinstein is such a big deal, what about Lynn Hirschberg palling around with Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino or Felicity Barringer and Condoleeza Rice?
