8/7 Any recommendations for data recovery software? I need to get
a few files from a broken NTFS hard drive running windows xp home.
        Cheaper is better.
\_ there's free shit on the net. google.
\_ tiramisu for NTFS can be found , fits on a floppy.
        \_ http://www.diydatarecovery.nl $70. I've used their FAT
version, and it did a very decent job.
\_ Drive Rescue. Used to be freeware, but now is not. You can still
           download a freeware version from:

8/3 VMWare + Windows XP + Validation question. I need to test stuff with
Service Pack 3 installed. I have a valid key that I own (yeah yeah I
actually *bought* a copy, please don't flame me for supporting evil
M$). Is it possible to register the key once, and then duplicate it
for testing purposes? Will Windows or Microsoft detect copies and
        disable the rest the copies?

2/20 I'm using Cygwin/X on XP. All the X indows (xterm, emacs)
seem to have a keyboard repeat rate and a repeat delay that's different
than the one XP uses for other Windows apps. When I do "mode con
rate=xx delay=yy", it only changes Windows apps but not the X apps.
How do I change the keyboard repeat rate and delay for X? Thanks.

11/29 I'm experimenting with virtualization, and as a poor college student

In Windows you can uninstall programs by selecting Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Windows keeps information about the programs that can be uninstalled from your computer in an uninstall list in the registry. As any program or anybody with a registry editor has access to this uninstall list, the list may become corrupted or even destroyed. In this case you may no longer be able to uninstall programs from your computer! UninstallAbility maintains backup copies of this list and of all uninstall information and allows you to easily restore it if necessary. UninstallAbility can also help you when a program you want to uninstall has disappeared from the uninstall list, but not from your computer. UninstallAbility can restore it from a backup copy so that you can remove it from your computer. This small utility reboots the computer and then lets you defrag with the minimum of applications running. It will scan all files in all directories of a new CD compilation and create a list of file signatures. CDCRC is small enough to be conveniently included on any CD-R or CD-RW compilation and offers immediate verification of the files after burning is completed. Burning CDCRC along with the signature list it generates is a simple and effective way of validating your data at any time and anywhere. If you are unsure of your CD-ROM software, drive or media, CDCRC is the solution. East-Tec File Shredder securely destroys (shreds) sensitive and private files beyond recovery. Simply drag and drop files to the shredder icon on your desktop, or select the files you want to destroy directly from the Windows Explorer right-click menu. Your sensitive files will be gone for good and nobody will be able to recover your valuable corporate trade secrets, business plans, personal files, photos or confidential letters. East-Tec File Shredder overwrites and verifies the destruction of every bit of the file, making recovery impossible. It just enables you to do that more quickly and more easily. JDN Reserve only takes a second to run and you can always delete any or all of the reserved space instantly and without problems. Clean Your Temp directory, Recycle Bin and Recent Documents folder in one click. You have now the freedom to pause and resume your file transfers with just a click of a button. SRE|copy's automatically pauses on any errors that may occur. SRE|copy will not replace Windows' own copy function - making it possible to decide how you want to copy your files. SRE|copy will put itself on your drag-and-drop handler for files, directories and drives. Some advantages of this are: No more lock-ups * Some applications load as much as 40% faster * Prevents blue screens * Makes web surfing faster, especially if you visit sites with heavy graphics. PINs uses a secure 448 bit Blowfish algorithm to ensure the data are not crackable. The password used for securing access to stored data is not saved anywhere.
