And, as expected, the US taxpayer will be paying for the mop, bucket and whoever cleans up the mess. However, it is acceptable in Islam to murder infidels just because they're infidels. I guess burying alive a cow and a virgin girl (so long as both the cow and virgin are infidels) will satisfy Islamic doctrine. Everything radical Islam touches turns to totalitarian barbarism. After all, to Kofi and the UN, Americans are war-mongering, capitalistic, imperialistic, globalist fiends bent on conquering the world. Killing humans to obtain power is witchcraft (NOT Wicca, and not African traditional religion) and does occur in Africa. You can see milder versions of it in Santara: where you kill a chicken to satiate the gods. The bible describes similar animal sacrifice in the Temple, and many pagan religions did the same. But evil people often wanted more power than could be obtained by sacrifice to good gods, so they killed humans to "more powerful" gods, who are clearly demons not gods. When I lived in Liberia, every once in awhile a street kid would be found dead and mutilated. They put parts of his body under a store as a way to be successful. Most of the Muslims in Liberia came from the north and were a small minority. There was a documentary on the BBC, about child sacrifice in Africa, based on the sad case of a mutilated torso of a little boy found in London. Apparently, children are smuggled into Europe and England to be used for such rituals. Two tasks already committed to are far from finished, both predominately Islamic. I pray not too many more lives are wasted while Bush learns these beasts only respect force. Continuing Clinton's US military Peace Corps agenda is the greatest mistake possible when dealing with fanatics. When the Tuggee death cult threatened British interests in India they didn't solve their problem with a "hearts & minds" attitude. The Soviets handled this right when they dumped the bodies of terrorists at their HQ's front step after their organization kidnapped some Russian citizens. You seem to have a pretty wide paint brush to label me as "Pro-Taylor". I know it's been going on quite a while, but the media never gives any good information. Enough times of "let the UN do it" and we'll be surprised how strong they grow. The UN has been in West Africa for almost ten years now, and the region is worse off than ever and more dependent than ever upon the UN. Another ten years of the UN and they will own West Africa. And Liberia is our problem by virtue of the Taylor government's taking bribes from Al Qaeda to hide the embassy bombers. Muslim "rebels", many of them children, are waging a regional jihad in West Africa, and the UN is right behind them brokering cease-fires, establishing "war crimes" star chambers (one for Sierra Leone indicted Taylor, a foreign head of state), and creating aid dependence. Most of all, Liberia is A BIG PROBLEM because of massive corruption in diamond mining and the shipping registry. The greater West had not yet been opened, and Indians were still fierce on the borders of civilization where land was cheap and plenty. Industrialization and rampant immigration were sweeping the North, planting stress and intolerance and squalor and disease on previously free soil. Liberia in the 1820-1840 period was a wide open new frontier. The US gave the settlers guns and money and free passage. And the Americo-Liberians built their own free republic and governed it in peace and modest prosperity for over a century, before the communists taught all the tribals that the reason they didn't have any money or social status was the fault of the people who did have money and social status. When I was there, the descendents of American slaves ran the place and kept the locals out of the govenment. The closest thing to how they ran the country was how white South Africans kept Bantus out of the government. But since in Liberia the masters were black, no one noticed. A lot of the locals got little education, and the businesses were allowed to kick people off their ancestral land. The country and it's businesses were actually run by outsiders: Most of the doctors I worked with were Nigerian Ibu (christian refugees from the Nigerian civil war). The nurses etc were local people, mostly Kru, which is a coastal tribe that lives in several countries. Lebenese ran most of the businesses but could not "own" them. Rolling stone had an article on their incompetence, with the headline: Country go bang. The civil war is complicated by big business, Libya, and spill over from the civil war in nearby countries. It is tribal--locals tribes v slave descendents, christian versus "islam", etc. I'm not up on the local politics right now: check human rights watch. Didnt't they get an "honorable mention" from the League of Nations for enslaving the local indigenous population? And I don't know under which bed you've found these "communists" since they never gained a foot-hold in that country. I know Liberia was founded by former slaves from the Americas. Still, I have visions of another Marine massacre if we're not careful and well prepared. I'm not saying that we as a civilized people don't offer help to struggling or war-scared peoples. There just has to be a better and more efficient way that helps people to become more responsible for their actions rather than rely on the UN Plantation to solve their problems. Europeans being the most likely villains in past centuries. We forget that we, the USA, were created through colonial imperatives. Yet we overthrew our masters and created a country that is the envy of our once masters and much of the rest of the world. Yet, in the darkest continent there is little evidence of the smallest desire to be free and create anything. They have been subjected to all of the crucibles which might cause an insight as to how to move forward but they have not. Africa is a land of plentiful resources, as compared to somewhere like Nippon, yet the Japanese have prospered while the Africans have yet to leave the chute. There are a lot of racist views which would explain this. I am interested in hearing a viewpoint that explains Africa's lack of progress. So, whilst I don my flame-retardant vest and get my K-pot on, here goes: It's a cultural thing. I give point to the Japanese and German work ethics, for starters. Point is, in Europe and the Near East, and also Japan, there were cultural codes of conduct, trade practice, and work and behavior ethos. I find these things missing in sub-Saharan Africa, with the noticable exceptio of the Euro-Colonial enclaves. I admit that I am ignorant of the culture but I think tribalism usually evolves into some superior societal structure. After centuries of tribal behavior, why hasn't Africa evolved into a market based behavior pattern? What is there in Africa that doesn't exist in the rest of the world? The ability to chop up your tribe's rivals without a second thought does not bode well for a form of government in which all, at least under the law, are equals. It appears that whoever gets in power favors their tribe, and when the government changes, it's the same old thing, only with a new tribe. The other thing I don't understand is why dictators don't do more to endear themselves to the people. If I were a dictator, I'd take 90% of the international funds sent to my country and give the people an infrastructure, food, etc. Meanwhile, I've happily skimmed 10% off the top (and we're talking real money here) and no one really cares. I'm not sure I share Bush's feelings about everyone being ready for self-government. So, if you are going to have a dictatorship, why not a useful one? You do not have to rob and rape your country, a la Mugabe, to run an efficient dictatorship. I have often wondered why the African countries haven't made the economic leaps of the Asian countries. I don't know why they can't look around the world and see what works - and it isn't tribalism or dictatorship. I stand by my initial sentiment - I am glad that my forebearers were brought to this country. Even under segregation and Jim Crow, my relatives owned property, got college educations...
