4/3 Please recommend a DSL provider on the East Bay other than PacBell
that provides a consistent low-packet loss, low-latency network
connectivity to the campus net, preferably with a static IP address
        option.
\_ PacBell sucks loads of ass. Try Speakeasy. A number of sodans
           use it, including me. -scotsman
\_ Which part of these other DSL companies' connection is their
own equipment, and how much is resold SBC's connetions?
\_ The local circuit to your ISP is with your local phone
carrier, so SBC/PacBell. Then Speakeasy is typically
resold over Covad. I like Speakeasy, but other friends
of mine have gone straight to Covad. --sowings
\_ I have had good results with PacBell.
\_ Stay away from PacBell. PacBell is evil and does not concern
itself with customer satisfaction. I would tell stories but
it would take too long to explain.
\_ Write it up in your directory and point us to it.
\_ I agree. When I first got DSL, it took them nearly three months
to figure out why my connection kept dying. They finally realized
they set the max bandwidth too high (my location was the max
distance from the station) and finally lowered my speed to 768kps
\_ well, a recent one was my friend being offered a "free trial" for
DSL (already had cable modem), so friend agrees, gets package in
mail, installs, sees that speed sucks ass, we're talking 12KB/s
or something, anyway tries to cancel service and then the fun
begins. Basically they are not honoring the trial and charging
some $200 cancel fee, and being insulting on the telephone, etc.

5/23 I have DSL through AT&T. The service was originally established
through PacBell, transitioned to SBC, and now AT&T. I still have
my original plan and never converted to a SBC Yahoo! (now AT&T
Yahoo!) account. I noticed the price will be a lot cheaper if I
do. Are there any drawbacks? I thought someone mentioned some
negatives about the Yahoo! tie-in once upon a time.

2/18 My DSL modem's ip address is 192.168.0.1, my internal network
behind my router is 10.0.0.x. Is there a way I can configure
the router so I can access the DSL modem from my 10.0.0.x
network directly without re-wiring? Static routes? I tried it
but no much luck. I also tried changing my internal network to
192.168.0.x, but still does not work. Thanks.

1/28 Just switched to Comcast from SBC and generally happy with it. But
can someone please explain to me why they are constantly pumping
ARP traffic through the network? It seems harmless, but I'm curious
as I didn't see it with DSL. It's a little disconcerting to see
constant traffic on your router, even if ARPs are harmless from
a bandwidth perspective, and it makes the WAN send/receive light

4/7 What startup script or configuration file can be modified to set
the ip address of a unix (actually Mac OS X) box to a particular
value? This is an emergency. Thanks a lot in advance!
\_ you can try running ifconfig or ipconfig *after* startup.

2/13 I'm a cable modem user (comcast). More and more ISPs have been
blocking email sent from my home server for being a cable modem
user. Has this been happening to DSL users, too? Just now earthlink
bounced me for being a "dynamic ip/openrelay" as if it is the same
thing. I don't care about the various cable vs. dsl flame fests. I
just need to know if switching to DSL will help or not. thanks!

1/14 I am getting DSL for the first time. The instruction from SBC says
that I have to install stuff from their CD and leave the modem on for
10 days for them to "maximize the speed." I don't really want to
install their custom browser and god-knows-what. Can I just ignore
their instructions and still get the highest speed possible?
\_ do the entire install, then afterward, just use the EnterNet

12/21 My isp for residential service does not allow any commercial use.
So it means I cannot set up receive emails to me@mydomain.com at
home? How do they enforce this? Can they read my traffic to see
if it is personal or commercial in nature?
\_ Has any ISP ever enfored this?
\_ Is http://mydomain.com a commercial domain? I've been doing it for years

10/10 I'm thinking of gettin Speakeasy's 1500/768 ADSL $89/month.
Does anybody have experience with them? And latency issues?
\_ I have this and I'm happy. Service and quality are high,
and outages are extremely rare -- I've not had any in more
than a year. My latency is very low and Speakeasy has good
           peering. --aaron

9/5 Home Networking problem. I managed to get a set of 5 real IPs.
(ok, 8... minus broadast, gateway, etc). I want to set up a wireless
network at home, as two of the computer, one wirelessl connected
will be running server. Ideally, I would like to have a sort of
DHCP running so occationally, family member with their labtop can
get a dynamic IP and access to the internet. What kind of functionality

2/8 I am thinking of getting an ADSL. I have a choice of 5 dynamic
IP, or one single static IP. My issue is as follows: I want
to run my little server from home, but at the same time,
I will be sharing this broadband with two or more computer.
What should I do? Get the Static IP option and buy a router
off shelf? Would that give me the ability to run server?

1/18 So I have a cable modem and both a Debian Linux and a WinXP
