        Amerikkka: http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20030307-093444-9730r
\_ It is one thing to give extra credit for students who write letters
expressing their views, its is a completely different thing to give
extra credit only if students write letters that concur with the
           teachers agenda.
\_ i knew a guy once who was a history major. he used to write
all his papers slanted opposite the political views of this
teachers on purpose just as a challenge. the amazing thing is
he was such a good writer it actually worked for him.
\_ Ironic that the poster here argues for teacher freedom of speech
while argueing against student freedom of speech.
\_ NO FREE SPEACH FOR FASCISTS!!! -actual sign held by
Berkeley radical. In case you didn't get the memo, irony is
              dead.
\_ Did he really spell speech "speach"?
\_ Thats why the President of the University wrote an apology
           to President Bush.
And I suppose you view teachers critizing children in the classroom
whos parents are soldiers deployed in the Gulf is also free speech.

United Press International College to apologize to Bush for professor By Lou Marano Published 3/7/2003 10:11 PM WASHINGTON, March 7 (UPI) -- The president of a California college is sending a letter to President Bush apologizing for an instructor who gave students extra credit for writing anti-war missives to the White House. Zellers wrote that Professor Rosalyn Kahn "did abuse her authority" in assigning students in her Speech 106 class to write letters to Bush protesting the possible war with Iraq. Halvorssen said that Kahn collected the letters from the class and personally delivered them to Scott. Zellers called Kahn's assignment "an injustice" that ought not to have happened. Efforts to reach Kahn Friday afternoon were unsuccessful. Samuel Lee, associate dean for Language Arts and Foreign Languages, told United Press International that he already had taken action before being contacted by FIRE but that the details and perspectives FIRE provided helped him to form his thoughts more clearly. The dean said on Tuesday he sent Kahn a detailed e-mail, with copies to the students, saying the practice had to stop and must be set right. All students in the class were given the chance to resubmit letters expressing any political opinion they might have and receive credit for them. He asked the students "a list of very specific questions" about the allegations. Lee told UPI that he promised students a written account of their grades to date so they can make any disputes known before marks are assigned. There are indications that this might be a coordinated effort by the teachers union as complaints have come in from as much as 300 miles apart. This is outrageous and should be elevated to national news! Not that I doubt for a minute that the socialists in possession of our kids would stoop to this new low. They should run out of town after a good tarring and feathering. Miles 77 Post Reply | 78 Private Reply | 79 To 1 | 80 View Replies To: bogeybob These Marxist traitors are cowards in time of war and even bigger cowards when they are "cowering" back at home. Just like the Islamoterrorists, they cannot confront a citizen/soldier, preferring to attack children who are forced by law to be in their presence. I hope that when the soldiers return home, they get some of these wimps alone and jack their fat, floppy jaws. The people controlling the agenda of the teachers unions are using the children in their control to try to control the parents. Failing that, they settle for control of the next generation of adults. However, just as any other person is provided with due process, we should allow these teachers to get it as well. The Maine Guard will go on camera but has NOT release the names, towns or schools involved. With over 30 complaints from all over Maine, something is happening out there! These "educators" are guilty of child abuse and need to be brought up on charges ASAP. Parents, complain to an agency that has teeth, get those teachers suspended pending the investigation, and demand the teachers union foot the bill for professional counseling. Also, let's hope there is a national registry to prevent these teachers from moving to another state and leaving their sorry record behind them. And they waonder why public schools are no longer supported. The fellow teachers and administration suggested that this fuddy duddy professor take a much needed "sabbatical" and go tour Europe for a year or two. Army, avoided "Command", so was given Second in Command. But circumstances PUT him in command on the fateful day which kept Gettysburg from becoming a Federal defeat, and was awarded the medal of honor for doing so. Not sure how GODS AND GENERALS turns out on film, as I'm still waiting for Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers) to show up. This needs to be splattered all over America to prevent other teachers in other states from traumatizing other children. Others to consider might be Foxnews, Howie Carr, Neal Boortz, etc. The entire Maine daily print media is very, very liberal. Please update the topic so we can be sure and get our Maine FReepers clued into this travesty in their own back yard. They are under US Army control, and are assets of the federal government. I'm going to send this to Senator Warner, and disseminate it down here so that others are aware that the education elite are harming little ones by bashing the military, and their own families. Long past time to annihilate these evil teachers unions. I think the Guard General does report to the Governor, however. This may be the tip of the iceberg of something happening nationally, and if so, needs to be exposed. With that said, I cannot imagine a concerted effort by local teachers to harass and belittle the child of a service member. I cannot imagine the horror of a child that not only has a parent plucked out of his/her life to go far away and maybe not come back. I can, however, imagine what would happen if such a concerted effort was made here. I could imagine hundreds, if not thousands of Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Coasties laying the boots to local teachers, schools and schoolboards. Maybe something of that nature could be coordinated in Maine? However, when the units are on federal duty, they are under the command and control of the regular Army, and the US Government officials until they are returned to state duty and demobilized. After demobilization, they return to state government control. Believe me, a call to a good republican senator or congressman will get amazing results in no time flat! I can understand not throwing out there for public consumption every slanderous claim which comes along, but I'm convinced something more is going on in this case. The hyperleftwing track record of the NEA and its adherents is well-known. The public schools of America have suffered from leftist hegemoney for over 40 years. In addition I think that Laura Bush needs to be informed. Right after 911 Laura made some appearances on television suggesting to parents and teachers to be sure to let their children know that they were loved and that they were safe. At our DoDDS school in Stuttgart, Germany every teacher got a special message from Laura Bush instructing us about ways to help protect the children from the trauma. I encourage any and all Freepers to make expose these urchins. Can you imagine a soldier getting a letter from their nine year old son saying "Mr. If you EVER get wind that your public-schooled children are being subjected to this sort of total crap, yank 'em out of that Indoctrination Center as fast as you can run and homeschool them. A Citrus College professor had compelled undergraduate students to write anti-war letters to President George W. Bush--penalizing the grades of students who dissented or refused to send the letters. The Citrus College administration, working closely with FIRE, resolved the situation. FIRE wrote to Citrus College President Louis Zellers on March 4 to alert him that FIRE had been contacted by students in Professor Rosalyn Kahn's Speech 106 class, a required course at the public college. FIRE received compelling documentation that Kahn had required students, to achieve full credit, to write letters to President George W. Several students requested that they be allowed to complete the assignment by expressing their own opinions, which would mean, in some cases, writing letters in support of President Bush's foreign policy. Kahn told the students that letters supporting the president would not be acceptable and would not receive credit. Several students refused to turn in the assignment and were penalized. One week later, Kahn again required students to write letters with a specific political viewpoint, this time to California State Senator Jack Scott. Professor Kahn collected the letters from the class and personally delivered them to Scott. The Senator's office told FIRE that the letters were not solicited. This was an unconscionable abuse of classroom power," said Halvorssen. After Chris Stevens, a student in Speech 106, contacted FIRE and requested assistance, supported by other members of the class, Halvorssen reminded Citrus College that a public college, or, indeed, any college that honors academic freedom, may not stipulate a commitment to any set of beliefs as a condition of participation in the classroom. Classroom assignments that mandate values and commitment to certain beliefs create a loyalty oath that is injurious to intellectual freedom. FIRE had constructive conversations with Associate Dean Samuel Lee. Dean Lee understood the issues involved and quickly addressed FIRE's concerns. In a letter to FIRE, received today, the College agreed to resolve the matter by appropriately sanctioning the professor, apologizing to and reassuring the students in Speech 106 that their grades would not be affected by these assignments, and ensuring this situation would not occur again at Citrus College. Additionally, President Zellers will send letters to both President George W. Bush and to State Senator Jack Scott apologizing for this violation of freedom of speech and formally withdrawing the sham letters.
