Actually, the lawsuit, brought by 41 state attorneys general, was settled out of court by the defendants last September to avoid a lengthy battle. The terms: they will pay $143 million in punitive damages. Anyone who meets a three-part criteria which essentially boils down to the question up top is entitled to a chunk of the loot. After many months of diligent hard work, several attempts to refocus our misson-critical functions on enabling new customer productivity and even cost-cutting measures including removing the free latte machine, I have to relay the heartbreaking news that, as of this morning, I have been fired as part of a company-wide headcount reduction. Later, we stopped by Matrix Fillmore on the way back to my apartment. Driving down the 101 in my Infiniti, the traffic was unusually light and even a bit of sunshine peeked through the clouds for me. There was a palpable tension in the office when I arrived at 8:30. People were going in and meeting with Jim, our boss, one after the other. I could feel a lump in my throat when he called me over. We sat down, and he looked at me, and I just knew that this was it. I begged, pleaded, even a solitary tear ran down my cheek, but John was insistent. He gave me a list of headhunters and offered to put me in touch with some contacts at other companies. Their support and companionship on our many business trips and meetings really made work a pleasure. At times like these, you really need people close to you?
