1/33 I've noticed that some people are using the <bgsound ...> tag
in their html. Is this actually portable across say both IE and
        NSCP? ok thx
\_ where, for example? Real questions is: is it Valid HTML?
        \_ http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/sounds/sounds_famsupp_18.html
\_ As this page ^ says, "Do you really want to do this?
Background sounds have a way of annoying people."

\_ good thing PopUpCop can disable this.
\_ related question on popups. I've tried disabling javascript
and java, but sometimes I still get popups! How come?
\_ maybe you have one of those background ad things installed.
                   e.g. GATOR.
\_ maybe you're not using mozilla.

4/8 What's a good free e-mail provider? I don't want to use Gmail,
Yahoo, Outlook, or any of those sites with features I never use that
track my personal info and keep changing their interface. I want just
simple e-mail without privacy issues or all the baggage these large,
for-profit companies are adding. I might even be willing to pay.
        Recommendations?

You might at this point ask why you can't just use both and let each interpret its preferred tag. This is the sort of thing that happens when there isn't a standard to follow. With this lack-of-standards problem, the best to hope for is a situation that plays the sound in most situations, and in the other situations doesn't play the sound and doesn't give error messages. This can be accomplished using scripting, as in this example. Again, that's the price being paid for lack of standards. Well, that's the problem with this sort of kludge: you have to try to anticipate all the situations and avoid the nasty ones. Hopefully in the foreseeable future the browser makers will correct this problem.
