Sep 16 2003: Long awaited update As many of you have heard, several weeks ago it was announced that Firefly would be made into a feature film. We are all obviously very happy that Firefly will have at least one last hurrah, and we congratulate all those involved. All of these people put in many hours to get the word out and help raise awareness, thanks to you all. Of course, congratulations to everyone at Mutant Enemy and the cast and crew of Firefly. Final number of signatures: 8193 On February 4th, 2003, Nathon Fillon signed a six-figure talent holding deal with NBC. The cast has apparently been released from contracts and will be seeking other gigs. Firefly will almost definitely not be returning to production, ever. Update (2/10/03): I really wanted to title this "They took the sky from us", but I couldn't do it. It was a valiant fight to save a show seen by many fans as revolutionary, something changing the face of modern science-fiction. However, the fans lost, and in turn, so did the world of television science-fiction, as Serenity will never see flight again. I'd like to thank Joss Whedon for creating Firefly in the first place, Tim Minear for obvious reasons, and everyone at Mutant Enemy for doing what they could. This will be one of those things that I'll remember for the rest of my life as something that just should never have happened. Not to sound overly dramatic, but I certainly feel horrible when I see something of tremendous artistic value go away due to poor decisions of a financial backer. The show may be gone, but the world, the characters, and the stories that were told were enough to give the world a base to create other media based in the Firefly universe. I would hope for novels, comics, anything taking place inside of this intricate and interesting future so carefully created for this unique cast of characters. Update (1/11/03): The situation we're in is that the petition did not reach enough signatures prior to FOX completely writing off the show for it to truly make an impact. At this point, we will be focusing our efforts on sending the petition to the networks most likely to pick up Firefly (Sci-Fi, for example). We obviously cannot modify the petition once people have signed it. As such, we'll be forwarding the petition along with a cover letter to the networks in question, explaining what the original intent of the petition was, and then followed by the petition itself and all of the signatures. Being that the Sci-Fi network is currently the target of the massive "Save Farscape" campaign, we really need to beef this baby up if we're expecting to have an impact on these people. They've seen it all before, so we really need to get enough names on this thing to make it count. We all know there's countless firefly fans out there that would sign the petition if they simply knew about it. Update (12/13/2002): (Appropriately Friday the 13th) Firefly has been cancelled. We do not have enough signatures on this petition to make it matter. I would appeal to everyone to submit a link to this site to any website you can think of that could help the cause. Update (12/6/2002): There has been comment as to the value of signing an online petition. It should be known that should the show be cancelled, we intend to walk into Fox and hand-deliver a printed copy of the petition and all signatures to the proper individuals, along with contacting Fox Entertainment directly informing them of the petition and the amount of signatures on it at the time. So, it would be appreciated if you would assist us in making this a very thick document to hand over. By signing below, you are putting your name on the following petition: ---begin petition--- Dear Ms. Berman and Fox Entertainment, We, the undersigned, are writing in regards to Fox's recent decision to put Firefly on hiatus, which is often a precursor to cancellation. We feel that the show is among the best science fiction to have ever hit broadcast television. We are deeply concerned at the possibility that the show would be cancelled. We believe that this show could easily attract a significant following if it was given the chance. You are looking at a list of people who watch this show religiously, every week. We are fans who will watch this show for seasons to come, and we implore you, please, do not cancel Firefly.
