12/8 I'm building a Quiet PC. Anybody have opinions about the
Seagate Barracuda IV? It's supposedly the quietest drive
on the market. I'm also considering putting a 5400 RPM
Western Digital drive in a SilentDrive enclosure. But
the performance won't be as fast.
\_ Performance is loud. If you want performance you don't get
quiet. Let's be honest here, you don't need performance.
\_ i have a silent pc with a barracuda iv. works fine by me.
it is a little eerie when the computer makes no noise.
\_ Wimp. If it doesn't scream like a banshee it isn't a computer.
If you want quiet get a Palm Pilot.
\_ Hmm, ever used a laptop before?
\_ My laptop sometimes seems louder than my desktop. I *asked*
for a cool and efficient celeron, I *got* a monster that
                 sucks power and makes noise.
\_ Next time, tell Santa the exact model numbers to get.

when the maximum resolution of my monitor changes? When I
use my laptop, my emacs is too big (and I can't resize it

\_ Could only have happened if the Mac App Store had been a wild, wild
success, and they were willing to give up Steam. Games/dual-booting
is strategically valuable to not driving people away from macs.

useful to me, but I use my computer for more than web browsing,
Facebook, and Twitter. Why would I buy one instead of a laptop?
They seem like a disabled laptop to me, but at a higher price.

development, QA and other office use (HR, Finance, Receptions, etc.)
from WinXP to Win7 a few months ago. Our products now primarily

I always had matte in the past. I use my laptop just about everywhere

        glossy is the default now.

5/27 I just spend a few hours on a silly BIOS problem and I'm posting it

F17, which is in 2004. It comes with the MB Sil (Silicon Image)
3112A SATA controller, which unfortunately, is outdated from 2002

5/17 My new 750G Seagate HD shows only 698G available. WHAT THE FUCK??
\_ 750G = 750*10^9 bytes. Your OS is probably measuring in 2^30 bytes.
           See GiB vs GB
\_ Also, disk drive manufacturers advertise "raw" storage, while
your O/S measures usable storage. You lose quite a bit to
disk label information, metadata and other various things.

\_ No, but I have a fanless 800 MHz Via C3, with a big Zalman heatsink.
Got the CPU on ebay for about $50 and got the heatsink (CNPS-6000AlCu
Flower Cooler) from http://endpcnoise.com for about $40.. Runs great.

\_ Statistically, sooner or later you will get unlucky. Also, every

from a couple years ago. If it's 2 months old it should still be

12/21 What's the quietest, most reliable 300-500GB HD out there these

performance. Also a related question, when do you guys think
