8/5 My friend says not to use blank screen as a screen saver on my LCD
display because it actually stresses the LCD more (he says that it's
naturally white). Is this really true?
        \_ http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88343
\_ if it were "naturally white" then wouldn't it be white when it's
turned off? skip the screen saver and just have the LCD go into
           standby mode.
\_ It is white because the LCD doesn't block any of the
backlight. When turned off, the backlight is off, too.
Turning it off or using DPMS is good, too.

Discussion Symptom If you leave an unchanging image, such as a login screen, on the screen for a long period of time, you may see a faint remnant of the image even after a new image has replaced it. Products affected * Apple Studio Display 17 * Apple Cinema Display (20-inch) * Apple Cinema Display * Apple Cinema HD Display Solution You can prevent image persistence by using the Energy Saver sleep feature to turn off the display when it is not in use, or by using a screen saver that does not leave a static image on the display for long periods of time. You should use the Energy Saver sleep feature because the backlight bulbs are turned off during periods of inactivity, which may prolong their useful life. In the rare event that an image does become persistent the following steps can be taken to eliminate it: 1. Temporarily set the Energy Saver sleep setting available in Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X to 'never sleep'. Display an all-white pattern across the entire display for the same amount of time that the persistent image had been displayed on the screen. For more information on using the screen saver feature built into Mac OS X type 'Screen Saver' into Mac Help. If necessary, repeat the procedure until the persistent image is gone.
