6/17 How does WinNT schedule Tasks? Who gets priority?
\_ Priorities 16-31 are "realtime" priorities which are absolute. Any
thread with a higher number runs until idle before any thread with
a lower number can run. Priorities 1-15 are normal priorities.
a lower number can run. Priorities 1-15 are dynamic priorities.
CPU cycles. Not sure about priority 0. --- yuen
A thread with a higher number gets a bigger share, but not 100%, of
CPU cycles. Not sure about priority 0. It probably means it doesn't
run until all other threads with priority 1 or above are idle.
           --- yuen
\_ thanks. But what is the behavior of equal priority tasks?
\_ For normal priorities, timeslicing. For "realtime"
priorities, a thread runs until idle before another thread of
the same priority can run. --- yuen
\_ Can one thread interrupt another?
\_ sure, causing a BSOD would be a pretty nasty
                        interruption.
\_ Yes, if it has a higher priority.
\_ Where can I get the nitty gritty ugly details of
exactly how threading works in 98/nt/2k/xp?

4/28 Win 3.1 was more widely adopted than Win 3.0. Win XP (5.1) was more
widely adopted than Win 2k (5.0). Now it looks like Win 7 (6.1) is
going to be more widely adopted than Vista (6.0). Is this a trend on
        Microsoft x.0 versions being bad?
        \_ duh.

1/18 Looking for a good backup program on XP. I like the simplicity
of the default XP backup program, but I'd like to have encryption
on top of it. I've considered WinZIP with encryption but it is a
bit clumsy, and I've considered tar/pgp, but I'd hate to tar and
then pgp separately. What are some alternatives? Thanks.

9/16 I want to compile a simple Windows console app, are there any
gnu/free compilers for windows that would do it? I'd rather not
install visual studio and all its crap... my app is in C and calls
        windows APIs.. thanks.
\_ I'd say Cygwin but it probably doesn't support your Windows calls.

8/13 Is there a security patch against the Blaster Worm for NT Workstation?
All I see on the MS web site are patches for NT Server, NT TSE, and
versions of 2k / XP / Server 2003, but not NT Workstation. Thanks.
        \_ yes, just delete winnt/system32/msblaster.exe

8/11 I recently installed XP on my laptop, and it's been fine for the
past few days. STarting today though, I get an error during
boottime saying Windows can't open up the file TFTP2396, and
it prompts me to give it a program to open it up with. I hit
cancel, and then about 10 minutes later the "WinNT Authority"
hits me with a dialog box saying it has to shut down the machine

1/17 Is it possible (advisable) to upgrade from Windows 98 SE to
Windows XP? Win2k? Is there a way to safely convert a FAT32 FS
        to NTFS?
        \_ w2k and I assume wxp have a converter for f32->ntfs.  I've always
found that doing an MS 'upgrade' leaves you with a broken fucked up
system and in the long run you're better off with a fresh install

what I like. But I'm worried about the small things. I know that

1/30 On NT, what's the difference between a full-duplex sound card and one
        that's not full-duplex? Thanks.
\_ IIRC it was something about being able to process incoming and out-
going sound at the same time. For example, you'd need a FD sound
card for playing a game which had voice inputs or team shared
voice communications. Or for some sort of telephone-over-net thing.
